When we talk about cancer, we are not referring to a specific type of disease but to a concept that encompasses a large number of pathologies, characterized by the development of cells that divide and grow uncontrollably, spreading throughout our body and causing serious damage and including death.
Cuando hablamos de cáncer no nos referimos a un tipo concreto de enfermedad sino a un concepto que engloba un gran número de patologías, que se caracterizan por el desarrollo de células que se dividen y crecen incontroladamente, diseminándose por todo nuestro cuerpo y produciendo graves daños e incluso la muerte.
If a certain type of cancer develops localized in a single organ or tissue it can be relatively easy to kill it through specific treatments or using surgery when possible, the biggest problem is when the cancer spreads or other organs and tissues of the body in what is known as metastasis.
Si un determinado tipo de cáncer se desarrolla localizado en un sólo órgano o tejido puede resultar relativamente fácil acabar con él mediante tratamientos específicos o utilizando la cirugía cuando sea posible, el mayor problema es cuando el cancer se propaga o otros órganos y tejidos del cuerpo en lo que se conoce como metástasis.
But it seems that it is not easy to detect the moment in which this metastasis occurs, the monitoring of the millions of cells that make up a tumor dividing uncontrollably and much more difficult still to follow these cells in their journey through the body.

Now a group of scientists have succeeded in applying the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tool to monitor tumor cells as well as their expansion, with the aim of detecting the moment when the harmful metastasis occurs.
Ahora un grupo de científicos han conseguido aplicar la herramienta de edición genética CRISPR-Cas9 para el seguimiento de las células tumorales así como el rastreo de su expansión, con el objetivo de detectar el momento en el que se produce la tan dañina metástasis.
Roughly speaking, scientists use the aforementioned gene editing tool to "tag" the cells they want to monitor, without having to wait for natural mutations to occur in cells that differentiate them from others.
