There are already several methods capable of extracting carbon dioxide but the most complicated thing is to convert it later into something useful as fuel, but most of these conversion processes have low carbon efficiency or produce fuels that cannot be used because they are toxic, flammable or difficult to treat.

Now a group of researchers from MIT and Harvard have developed a different method that achieves a conversion of more than 90% in addition to eliminating inefficient steps. This new process converts CO2 directly into liquid metallic bicarbonate, which is then converted to potassium or sodium formate through an electrochemical process.
Ahora un grupo de investigadores del MIT y Harvard han desarrollado un método diferente que consigue una conversión de más del 90% además de eliminar pasos ineficientes. Once the process is finished, the liquid is dried and a very stable solid powder is obtained that can be stored for decades without losing its properties and that can be used to manufacture fuel cells, also designed by these researchers that allow electricity to be obtained efficiently from this dry powder.

The process can be applied not only to extract CO2 from the air but also to capture that emitted by industry before it reaches the atmosphere. According to its creators, the process is fully scalable so it can be used for both domestic and industrial applications or simply for large-scale storage.
