In December 1959, the Nobel Prize winner in physics Richard Feynman announced a conference called "There is plenty of room at the bottom" in which he wondered how small a machine could get and raised the possibility of creating machines using atoms and molecules as components of said machine.

But we had to wait until the early 1980s for this conference to arouse the first concerns in scientists, who would use this conference as a justification to start developing a new technology that we know today as Nanotechnology.

This new discipline includes the manipulation of matter at scales of 1 to 100 nanometers, that is, from 1 to 100 millionths of a millimeter, which takes us to the realm of atoms and the molecules formed by them in a kind of sophisticated chemistry.

Nanotechnology has an infinite number of applications, one of them being the creation of molecular motors in which the individual movement of molecules convert chemical energy into work which, on the other hand, is how the movement of microscopic living beings works.

In their quest to miniaturize, a group of scientists from Trinity College Dublin have created an even smaller motor based, not on molecules but on atoms, since this motor consists of a single electrically charged calcium ion.

The movement of this ion is its intrinsic spin or spin that is used to convert the heat absorbed from laser rays into oscillations of said ion, these vibrations allow us to capture the useful energy generated by the motor that is stored in units called 'quanta'.

Sure it has a lot of applications but where it fits me the most is in the fields of medicine and biology where these motors can give mobility to tiny molecular robots that patrol our body to hunt and capture pathogens.
