What is epigenetics?/¿Qué es la epigenética?

The term epigenetics refers to the study of the mechanisms that regulate the expression of genes without needing to modify the DNA coding for this, these epigenetic phenomena are usually due to environmental factors that condition the functioning of certain genes.

This would explain, for example, why monozygotic twins, that is, born from the same ovum that, in theory, have the same DNA, are not exactly the same or develop the same diseases or why if the cells all have the same DNA, some become bone and others in a liver cell

The DNA contained in the nucleus of any human cell has some 23,000 genes but not all of them have to be expressed or act and this is where epigenetics intervenes, which is what controls the expression of these genes depending on very diverse internal and external factors such as pollution or the more or less healthy habits of each individual.

Each of these genes contains the instructions to make a certain protein and it is epigenetics that, through chemical markers, makes said gene act and generate the protein or remain inactive through basically two epigenetic processes: DNA methylation and histone modification.

Although it seems incredible, the DNA of a single cell when it unfolds reaches about 2 meters, so, in order to store it within the nucleus of the cell, the DNA is packaged thanks to proteins called histones, which are rolled up one and again until perfect packaging is achieved.

As is logical, the genes that are packaged are not accessible so they cannot be expressed for it, thanks to epigenetics we can modify these histones so that they unwind the portion of DNA that contains the gene that we need to act through the use of chemical markers .

Another common form of epigenetics is the so-called DNA methylation, which is much more direct since it acts directly on the nitrogenous bases or "letters" of DNA, specifically on Cytosine, preventing the proteins in charge of reading the information from the genes from acting.

Of course, both the methylation and the modification of histones are reversible procedures, that is, they can hide the same as releasing a gene so that it can be read and its associated protein can be manufactured. And all this without the human being having even to be aware of the existence of epigenetics. Fascinating!.

Thank you @mauromar for well describing DNA. Does D N A control human behaviuor?

Hi momins, as you could read not only dna controls us but also epigenetics and each one's wife ;-)
Thanks for comment.
