What is the double-slit experiment?/¿Que es el experimento de la doble-rendija?

Since the seventeenth century there has been a debate on whether light is a wave or if it is actually particles, first Huygens with his wave theory and later Newton demonstrated that light was made up of particles, due to the fame of Isaac Newton his theory prevailed for a century and Huygens theory was forgotten.

But there were still unclear aspects in the corpuscular theory, so in 1801 Thomas Young carried out a new experiment to demonstrate the nature of light, the experiment consists of launching bursts of light against a plate in which two 0,2 mm thin slots have been made to collect its reflection on a photographic plate on the other side of the plate.

If the light is made up of particles on the photographic plate, we should see two vertical stripes of different thickness depending on how much light has passed through each slit, but if it is a wave we would see what physicists call an interference pattern and that consists of a vertical stripes pattern of different intensity depending on the interference produced by the waves after passing through the slits.

When carrying out the experiment, it was observed that an interference pattern was produced so that the light should be a wave, however they thought that it was possible that when launching a jet of photons they would interfere with each other and they decided to carry out the experiment but this once throwing the photons 1 to 1 to avoid that they could interfere with each other.

To their surprise, the experiment continued to produce an interference pattern which would somehow imply that the photon has passed through both slits at the same time and has interfered with itself, since this was difficult to believe they decided to couple to the experiment some sensors in each slit to see where the photon slipped through.

This was even worse because, when putting the sensors, two vertical stripes appeared on the photographic plate, one for each slit, which is what we all expected. Interestingly, if the sensors were disconnected, the interference pattern would reappear and when they were reconnected, the two vertical bars reappeared.

From this it follows that, in some way, the system knows when someone is observing it and changes its behavior, that is to say that reality changes just by observing it, which has been taken for granted a few years later with the discoveries of quantum physics by Neils Bohr and his colleagues in Copenhagen.

If this does not seem surprising to you, the scientists have still curled the curl more by placing the sensors near the photographic plate, after having passed through the slit, and verified that this time the pattern also changed to the two vertical bars which implies, as you may have deduced that the system would have had to travel to the past to know which of the two slits it has passed through. Awesome!.

¡Acojonante!.
