Coronavirus Brings Attention To Potential Security Flaws With Zoom

in #security4 years ago

More people are working from home these days and that means that more people are using video conferencing services like Zoom to communicate with others and continue to get work done.

In recent weeks, popularity for Zoom has soared, with many businesses forced to close or get workers to do whatever work that they can manage from their own home.

Third-party data has indicated that daily active user usage on Zoom has grown more than 300 percent in the last few weeks.

It's estimated that monthly active users for the popular app are now up almost 200 percent. For other options, like Microsoft Cloud services, they say that they've seen more than a 700 percent bump in usage.

Right now, Zoom is listed as the most popular app in the world, and because of that the stock price has also seen significant growth this year too.

But along with that increase in use for Zoom also came more focused attention to the platform. This meant discovering possible security flaws with the service.

It's reported that the company is currently being sued for having allegedly illegally given away users' personal data to outside companies.

It has been reported that Zoom has suffered from multiple security issues and vulnerable to hackers who might exploit the platform's meeting ID numbers and give themselves the opportunity to join in on meetings on Zoom if those meetings are not password protected.

Past issues have also allegedly shown vulnerability where attackers can remove people from meetings, hijack shared screens, and more.

A spokesperson for the company has insisted that they take the privacy of the users very seriously.

Just recently, the NY Attorney General sent a letter to the company asking them what security measures they have put into place to try and deal with the recent uptick in traffic to the app. That letter also allegedly outlined concerns with the platform. The AG's office has alleged that they are concerned about the company and their existing security practices, warning that it might not be sufficient enough protection or that they won't be capable of adequately adapting to the recent growth in use for the app.

Zoom also just recently changed their privacy policy, following the growing concern that users raised about privacy. The company continues to urge that they take privacy, security, and the trust of users very seriously. They also ensure that they are working day and night to try and meet the growing demands right now for Zoom, with many hospitals, schools, and businesses requiring the app to help them communicate.

I saw this yesterday evening when it hit the news wires and my son was on Zoom conference call outside at the time. It was his church youth group doing the call.
So when he came in I said, "Did you see any good porn on your Zoom meeting?" He gave a wtf look and , "I was on church youth Zoom meeting, it wasn't the porn club tonight"
He has a good sense of humor, too.
But then I showed him the article and said, "damn some folks have all the luck." and walked away.
Thanks for getting this out there,
