Local Coin Shop Find 12-13-2021

For anyone looking for Junk, Survival, Fractional, US Constitutional Silver, consider these:

These, 35% Silver Five Cents Nickels, have a melt value of about, $1.25 (USD), today. Actual Silver Content is (0.05625 Troy Ounce). Eighteen of these Fractionals will net a Troy Ounce of Silver. They are also, 56% Copper, storing about $.025 value. A little bonus, on top of its, $.05, face value.

The USA produced this alternative money, during the World War Two years, from, 1942-1945. There were some non-Silver, versions, of this Nickel, in 1942. The large mint mark, (P, D, or S), over the Capitol Building, IDs the Silver Coins. These Silver Nickels were to be recalled, in the future, when things calmed down. Of course, this never happened.

The Silver Fractionals, commonly circulated, in change, until Silver became recognized, as valuable, in the 1960s. Worn ones can, also, be easily spotted, by their dark or black tone.

These Silver Fractions can be some of the most inexpensive Silver available. They are not scarce or rare. The Local Coin Shop let me have one hundred, at $1, each. Not bad, considering their $1.25 melt value. Did you know that a current, common, US Five Cents Nickel's, metal content (75% Copper & 25%) value, is over six cents? And the similar metal content value, of a US Quarter-Dollar, is also about 6 Cents. Actually, the Nickel edges out the Quarter, in value, ($.0605 vs $.0589).

Those are truly amazing coins.
Thanks for sharing. Have a fantastic week!

I’m not a fan of 90% silver, as you already know. As an original coin collector not stacker it’s very difficult for me to look at beaten up coins that I would love to own in mint state condition. I’ve sold off all of my 35% & 40% silver coins.
I do have several mint state sets of war nickels, but those are worth way more then the 35% silver content

Thanks for looking and for sharing your thoughts and interest, @silverd510. One thing I find interesting, about old worn out coins, is how they got that way, and survived without being smelted or recycled.

I have actually only found one of these metal detecting. I was pretty stoked! 😃

Just wondered if you ever did any metal detecting?

Thanks for looking @old-guy-photos. Yes, I did a little metal detecting, but never had much luck. However, I have two friends, that are very successful at it. One said he was finding a Gold item every other day, of detecting. The other showed me a lunch bag full of Gold, many, many wedding bands, and several diamond engagement rings. Both mentioned, they found, much, much more non-gold, but valuable things, such as coins. Almost all, found on east coast beaches. People will constantly lose more stuff on a beach. Can't wait to see what you find, @old-guy-photos.

Yeah I know a guy on Virginia Beach that does really well finding gold rings on the beach. It is a fun hobby but al always it is a struggle to find the time!

Is one Ronnie or Robert?

His name is Max.
Youtube name gravediggermax

I bet you can still find these in loose change and penny jars, or even get a bunch of nickle rolls and try your luck.

Thanks, for looking & commenting, and yes, you would win that bet, @punkysdad. My trained, 70-year-old eyes spotted one, in change, within the last year. I always check my change, for the overlooked treasures.

When I was growing up, my dad acquired a one-armed Bandit slot machine. It was loaded up with nickels! It was a nickel machine. Because the gentleman was older. the Nickels were old and new, of course, but many were old and that was where I saw my first nickel from the war.. I had no idea that they were worth so much!

I love to hear these kinds of stories & experiences, dswigle - @dswigle. I wonder how many Nickels, went through your Dad's Slot Machine, before it was retired. It could have been millions. Thanks for sharing, dswigle - @dswigle.

We weren't allowed to take any. People knew that it was for fun and if they donated one to the machine, it stayed there! He got tons of them! People loved playing with it. It was only a nickel!

Chump change by many people standards... Look who is smiling now?

War nickels... very unique!'

Thanks for looking and commenting, SILVER SAVER - @silversaver888. I can't imagine why they made a Silver/Copper coin like this. These coins tarnish terribly. But, hey...
