Throughout the month of July, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
At 4:24pm on 22 July 2013, Prince George, who is third in line to the throne, was born to Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The young prince was revealed to the public the following day at the steps of the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s hospital, before being taken home by his parents.
In 2018 to celebrate the fifth birthday of the much loved Prince, the Royal Mint created a commemorative £5 coin. This coin design was revealed at the start of the year and has now been officially released to mark HRH Prince George’s fifth birthday.
This is the first time that Saint George and the Dragon has been depicted on a base metal coin in over 60 years, a key feature for collectors.
An entry level collectors coin, this cupro-nickel, £5(face value) commemorate coin, would have set you back £13 dorext from ghe Royal Mint. 8yrs on, these coins regularly exchange hands on the secondary market for £25+...... Personally, im not a fan of commemorative coins unless they are silcer or gold, so i dont own any of these offerings, butni can see these continuing to infrease in value as the years go by.
