A coin for every occasion: 26th July 1913 - A successful march for change...

Throughout the month of July, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

On 26 July 1913, 50,000 women gathered at Hyde Park at the end of a pilgrimage that had begun in June. The five-week march ended with a mass rally, organised by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies.

The peaceful event was one of many activities attended by women demanding the right to vote, which eventually led to the Representation of the People Act in 1918.

The First World War cost the lives of millions of men who answered the call to fight for their country. But these brave men did not have the right to vote at home. The women who kept the country running through their jobs in farming, munitions factories and coal mines were also not entitled to vote. Reform had to come.

The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave voting rights to women over 30, who met minimum property qualifications, and all men over 21. It was a landmark step on the road to equal representation and to the rights we enjoy today.

The gold version of the Representation of the People Act 50p was struck in 2018 to celebrate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918. The design by Stephen Taylor shows women and men of the period.

And following WW1, Ladies fashions saw women wearing trousers and hemlines went up above the ankle, all for practicability of course.😉
