Splinterlands - Reward card review: Halfling Refugee!

in #splinterlandslast month

Good morning everyone! Time to make more Splinterlands content, because now we are finally getting better again, as a game and as a community as a whole, we can't have enough of that. Of course we are far from done but it's very nice to see positivity again. 🙂

This is the third week I think the new reward cards have launched, and they are shaking up the meta which is always a good thing, it forces players to come up with new strategies or drop old strategies that worked before but now have good counters to them, the 'problem' in this early stage for the new cards is mainly that most players except for the top have them at very low level.
I have most commons at level 3 or 4, and only 1 epic at level 2 already so this will take some more time to unlock the full potential of the new cards, but of course when you are a lower level player one or maybe 5 BCX to get them to level 2 is all you need for now!

Don't burn the rest of your cards, you never know how long you will be here, three years ago when I started playing Splinterlands I would never have thought I could own some max level summoners and cards but I do, so now I need a whole lot of reward cards, and I haven't even completed my last set.

So there's a new challenge for us to make a post about, is the Battle Mage Secrets challenge gone forever or will it return once we had the chance to review all the new cards? I don't know! I think the latter but we will see, one tip from me, save the battles you can make posts about later - save them with some extra info like what rulesets it had or what new reward cards you used. 🙂

To find out how you can participate in this new challenge, check out the Splinterlands post here.

The star for this post is the Halfling Refugee, as you can see I now own 2 BCX on my main account, and still 0 for my alt, and the best thing is this guy is from the neutral splinter, meaning you can put him in any battle when you have 1 mana left.
Let's look at it's stats when it levels up...

image.png

O wow! I haven't studied the cards yet, I like to see what I get once I'm able to level them, or maybe I learn what they have at higher levels because I see them in battle from my opponents, anwyay, I don't like overloading my brain with info I can't use right now and it already takes time to get accustomed to all these new cards, their abilities, their possibilities and their mana value. Oh yes, Splinterlands is brain training!

So right from the start the 6 HP for only 1 mana is just a great filler card, and yes the 'weary'ability can sometimes be a real bitch, I'll show you later in this post 😆 but even in the worst case it misses rounds but it's still a 6 HP meat shield for only 1 mana.
The extra melee damage it receives at level 2 is very nice but the real fun starts at level 3, when you were able to collect 10 BCX of this guy because then he gets the self heal ability and this opens up new situations you can use him in, like stick him in the middle in poison matches or use it as a healing backline protection against sneak.
What to think of an equalizer battle when he gets even more HP so it will heal more every turn and put the new Mana Warden promo card behind it to give him shield!?
So many possibilities that's what I really love about this game, their are SO many ways to combine and synergize cards you can come up with strategies your opponents might have never seen before.

When it gets to higher levels it gradually gets more melee damage and HP so it can heal itself more every turn.

The lore...

Since the Chaos Empire conquered Praeotria, the land has seen a refugee crisis the likes of which it has never before known. With major cities and smaller villages alike torn apart by war, famine, and disease, very few sanctuaries remain.

In the Great Lowlands, many of these refugees travel to Fireboro, where the republic’s former chancellor and those loyal to him have established safe havens for those who lost their homes to the empire. Among them are the Republic of Fireboro’s Praetorian halflings, whose shires were mostly destroyed by the legions of Chaos. They remain defiant, yet it’s hard to keep fighting the good fight when you’ve lost everything you hold dear.

How does he perform in battle?

This is a recurring mantra in my post.. what is a Splinterlands post without a battle in it, right!? So let's have a look, and like I told you before, Weary can be a real bitch when the RNG god favors your opponent more than you. 😆

The battle I have saved to share for this post is a very low mana battle, perfect to slip a one mana card in! it's a Born Again / Fire and Regret / Armored Up Modern League battle with the Earth, Life and Death splinters open to be chosen from. With only 13 mana you don't have a lot of room to mix and match, because of armored up and ranged damage is being reflected back, a magic team is the most obvious and effective team to go for, so to counter this, a death team could be nice too. These two are surely the most obvious choices, the best team for the job and the counter to the best team. With the born again it can also be very nice to put a martyr up front, maybe in front of Windeku to get a pumped up self healing tank with thorns. I decided to go for the life team and pick mana small cards, the more - the merrier is an effective way to go to battle in Splinterlands many times because a large team of small monsters will be victorious over one big monster in most cases.

Sorry, I'm starting to ramble - Splinterlands does that to dedicated players it seems 🤣 in townhalls I like Nate ramble on his ideas and possibilities too, and yesterday I listened to the new edition of @thepeoplesguild podcast (tip! you should listen as a Splinterlands player, great for killing time while driving - most interviews take between two to three hours so you definitely need some time for this!) I heard @blewitt rambling on different subjects Splinterlands related, it's really fun and made me laugh, this guy has so much energy.
But here I go again, back to the post! 😋

First look at the battlefield:

image.png

Oh! I was actually right in the options we had and what my opponent went for! 😁 Mind you - this is a battle from last season I had saved and yes I could have a peek but I just opened the link and didn't look at the enemy team yet, it's fun to brainstorm about splinterlands battles - being an addicted dedicated splinterlands player makes me even think about new possibilities when I'm driving sometimes too, yesterday while listening to the podcast I though about a Possibilus - OShannus - Mana Warden combo which I still need to try, it must be fun to use!

My Line-Up:

  • Summoner: General Sloan - reason: Only for access to the life splinter, I could use another 4 or less mana life summoner sometimes for games like this one.
  • First position: Halfling Refugee - reason: 1 mana, good damage nice HP meat shield.
  • Second position: Pelacor Conjurer - reason: Fast and evasive, magic protection.
  • Third position: Stitch Leech - reason: High damage low mana sneaker with life leech.
  • Fourth position: Uraeus - reason: Good damage low mana sneaker with poison.
  • Fifth position: Soul Fiend - reason: 0 mana sneak protection.

The Battle:

image.png

Round 1: Because of the born again ruleset this will be a longer battle... so nothing really happened besides the enemy fiend dying for the first time.

image.png

Round 2: EXHAUSTED - so when weary procs, the Refugee skips a round but it still it a nice meat shield in this case.

image.png

Round 3: EXHAUSTED again.. the RNG god doesn't like me in this battle... poison dropped on Windeku so that's nice!

image.png

Round 4: Well, when my tank can't attack the martyr doesn't boost Windeku so in this case it's actually pretty nice 🤣

image.png

Round 5: Wow, so far, the refugee only attacked in the first turn! Windeku died for the first time, my sneaker are getting low in HP too but haven't died just yet, this is going to be fine for me.

image.png

Round 6: O wow! the Refugee actually attacked as soon as Windeku died, and killed Uraeus with it's thorns. Weary can definitely work in your favor sometimes 😁

image.png

yay! a win for me! getting some much needed glint and the SPS.. well... you never can have enough of 😊

You can watch the battle unfold for yourself here.

Enough rambling from me, kudos if you were able to stick until the end and I hope to see you on my next post or.. maybe on the battlefield!
I'll get another coffee and then more battles to drain my energy for both accounts before real life calls again...

Great R card write-up @nozem01 !

I listen to your podcasts on Spotify indeed (requires less data, audio only) instead of YouTube 🙂👍
It's a good tip, I wasn't aware of this option in Spotify

Thanks for sharing! - @azircon

A simple advice: reduce your post frequency to 1/day max. Then it’s easier to vote and your account doesn’t look like a reward farm account

Hi! Besides the Actifit post that require a post every day I already am posting only once a day, I listened to you saying this in the podcast with thepeoplesguild 🙂👍

nothing "requires" post once a day.

are you getting popular posting actifit everyday? do 50 people read your actifit post everyday?

it is your choice
