Is this the best pencil case design ever?

I LOVE stationery and over the years have tried so many pencil case designs. A while back I saw this pop-up pencil case design on Pinterest and was going to make one. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble on some inexpensive SMASH brand ones at the store though. They were out as part of the Back to School supplies.

I got the navy blue one. It has a vinyl top and a tight weave hessian (or burlap) canvas base. It feels pretty well made and sturdy. The thickness of the hessian-like material keeps the base stiff and helps it stand up.

When full of pens and closed it looks like this:

And when open, it looks like this:

Those are my favourite journaling pens - PaperMate Flairs for colour, and a Uni Style Fit 0.7 and Uni Jetstream 3 0.7 for writing.

I love that the pencil case stands up, becoming its own pen holder. It's so handy, especially when you're away from your desk studying or journaling.

This angle shows the flat base that allows it to stand:

While this is a fairly plain mass produced version available in Australian stores, you can buy all sorts of cute styled ones online. There are also a number of Etsy stores selling unique handmade ones - for example, a daschund one here and a cool solar system themed one here.

If you'd prefer to have a go at sewing your own, this free tutorial looks pretty good - Stand Up Pencil and Tool Pouch by Sew Can She. It walks you through the whole project step by step.

If you prefer to watch a video, this DIY Slide Pen Pouch YouTube tutorial by sewingtimes also looks good. It gives all the measurements in both centimetres and inches.

So what do you think - could this be the best pencil case design ever?

Would this kind of case fit your own work style when studying, working, or journaling away from your desk?

Until next time,
@Sammie

So you just push the top down to make the pen stand?

My middle child is a bit of a stationary addict as well, she's going to have to get herself an income to feed it XD

Yes, the top just slides down! It's quite clever. Despite buying one I'd still like to have a go at sewing one.

Being a stationery addict does get a little exxy. I'm trying to restrain myself to only truly useful things now - although most things can still be rationalised as "useful" ha ha!
