If you are a new Steemian and you follow me, do not be surprised if I do not follow you back, even if you put a generic comment on one of my posts asking me to do so. I already follow about 400 people and that's enough to keep my feed pretty busy. I do scan it each day, but it's still hard to keep up and I will miss posts by friends.
It's just not viable or useful for me to follow thousands of people. This is not some competition to get the biggest numbers. Steemit is about engagement and thoughtful curation. I value the comments I get on my posts and will vote them up (which pays a few cents), but if I see a comment saying 'Great post, please follow me', then I will ignore it as it adds no value. I know others are following everyone in sight, but they may find it doesn't scale.
I'm getting close to 1000 followers, but I realise only a fraction are actually looking at my posts. There will be some out to try and game the system, but I don't think they will thrive here. If you spam comments you are likely to be flagged, so please don't do it. We may see more of this as many more people join up.
I hope we will gain features on the site to make it easier to manage our feeds. Other services allow you to group people into lists/circles/whatever. Steemit really needs something like that.
I make some good money here, but it's by doing what is fun for me, so I don't consider it to be work. I hope Steemit will continue to be fun.
Steem on!

This reminds me of a meme I did

That is most defined meme ever. should use that to answer those comments of "I upvoted you, you upvote back"
Dude, I'm crying...
LOL that's awesome:)
Haha! Amazing. This is my policy too. If I were to follow everyone who put a generic comment into my post (hoping for a payout, no doubt) it's going to hamper my ability to keep up with the people who are posting stuff that I genuinely enjoy.
So fucking hilarious
LOL! - Best I've seen so far I think.. :D
Hahaha, Brilliant xD
Thank you for sharing. ☆☆☆☆☆😎
I whished to write such post several times, got pretty tired from such comments. I see not me alone:)
I thought about writing something like this myself. I do follow new people, when they A) write thoughtful and useful comments on my posts and B) have material that I find interesting and C) I get the sense there's a good chance they'll be sticking around.
I believe it's important to lend others a hand as was done for me, but definitely not when it's "Great Post please follow me." Terrible strategy, and sorry if I offend anyone who reads this, but I feel it should be rather obvious that it is. Though I"m guessing if someone gets offended by my saying that, then it isn't obvious. So I say to whoever that might be- I wholeheartedly want to see this platform grow, straight to the moon as people keep talking about, but with a certain level of quality. In both material and interaction.
Some will try to do it differently. They will soon learn what works
Agreed. When a comment looks generic I take the time to get into that person´s profile and see their comment section. If they have more than 5 like that I will flag that person. I don´t like to do it but I prefer tot ake care of Steemit and to have the community we all want. Good content pal.
I won't generally flag unless it looks really bad. I guess my flags will have some effect on a new user now
Yeah you are probably right. You have significantly more rep than me. I´ve only flagged like 4 people here and it was because they were blatantly harming the comunity with spam and comment that didn´t add any value at all.
Great comment, just followed you, upvoted and blah blah blah... LOL just joking bro, I know what you mean, that approach adds nothing of value to anyone here in the platform.
Thanks man, I´ll follow back, let´s help each other. Like for like, sound good?Hahahahaha lol.
Yeah, I mean, for example, when I do decide to follow someone just because of something specific I state it but to keep that going. Like, "hey I really like that you post about Sesame Street, your approach is very interesting, gonna follow you to keep updated about the subject" But that is as far as I go and I try to avoid doing it, feels like kissing ass. But sometimes a little retro of why you are following serves the writer to see what he/she is doing good.
LOL. It can be done smart and tastefully, without it seem like kissing ass. It's a fine art, but if it's genuine than it is fine. Most of the like/follow/look at me, me,me,me posts lately are not genuine in the least, and it is so obvious.
Besides, it doesn´t pay off. I can say that most of my follower base followed mi without me trying to make them. So when I post they do enjoy my content. They are not ghost followers like some accounts I´ve seen. I follow you since I was a 2 day old street puddle plancton and I can say that same thing about you.
Right on, I know we all get busy here and it's crazy at times, but I always enjoy when we get a chance to interact on here.
I was starting to come to this conclusion myself. I'm very, very new here, but I have a few friends and favorites on here already -- and I'm missing their articles! I'm going to be a bitch and go unfollow some people now.
I share this same sentiment! My feed should be a collection of stuff I love and enjoy. There's no point building up numbers just for the sake of it
Its starting to become like the Youtube sub for sub problem!!!!! Argh!!!!!
Following you :)

Cheers. Hope you enjoy what I do

I really think the approach of detecting undervalued posts is an great idea.
We need more ideas like this to get people engaged here are valued more ( not totally ! ) equal !
The trends of follow/unfollow are never going away. My prediction is that it will get exponentially worse if more of the masses show up here. It's the Twitter & Instagram way to do such actions, it's what is understood when everyone seeks the attention of everyone.
Steemit, however, lends itself to a different set of "rules" as this type of behavior is going to go nowhere fast for those people thinking it will work to make money or create some fictional engagement out of thin air.
I too hope Steemit can work in some circle or list style management, this would be awesome. Great thoughts on this one @steevc.
Steemit changes the rules in a few ways. Let's see if people can adapt
There's a learning curve, but it can be done.
Keepin' it real. :) I hope to provide awesome content that people will enjoy too. You're ideas are solid gold. Thanks for expressing them.
I just made a post including this very same sentiment today! I do not follow for follow, never have, never will. In my recent post I talked about my intentions Ansbach hopes for this account and being genuine is a huge one for me. I don't want empty follows, I surely won't give them!
I'd really like to be able to weed out resteem posts, to be honest! Especially when looking over someone's blog feed trying to see if their content is actually something I'm interested in or not.
Good post! I'm all about it!
The follow me and I will follow you requests are not quite as bad as the upvote me and I will upvote you ones, but it's close.
Circle jerking can destroy a site. I saw it happen to Epinions.com around the time of the dot com bubble.
It's happened on various other sites. I think Steemit was designed to discourage such behaviour.
Not always working as intended then, I'm afraid. Still, it could be much worse.
I've so far followed everyone back but as numbers grow there has to come a time when I start to edit who I follow which I think will be by the quality or relevance of their posts. I have those who's names I now recognize and when I see their post go to their walls to catch anything I've missed.
It's a good problem to have though as it means steemit is growing and healthy.
😂 dude totally understandable, we're only following a modest 120-ish people, and I already feel like my feed is completely bombarded. Its so hard to keep up with just that amount so i can imagine what it must feel like to have more than double that! Definitely can't wait until I have as many followers as your page does though! keep up the awesome content @steevc :-)!!
You have to find the right balance. I can't spend all day on here
really though!
Same here. I get those kind of messages a lot lately and mostly ignore them. When I feel like it, I write back, telling them that's not the way to be successful and to please stop doing this, because it will most likely just piss people off.
I try to suggest they go for real engagement. It's up to them how they go on.
Exactly, I always encourage them to write comments that actually add value.
There are rare occassions where I don't mind link dropping either, it just has to fit the conversation :-)
This makes it clear how difficult it can be if you follow an abundance of steemians: the inability to view/read/comment on every post.
Resteemed
Appreciated. We have to work with what we have
You're welcome Brother, this was a good post.
@steevc, makes sense to me. When steemit has millions of users, what will the big names have in $$$$$ payout?
Who knows? I hope us small fry will still be able to make something. I just want to see it get to millions.
That's OK I'm not worth following anyways!
It looks like hundreds of people disagree :)
I'm just fortunate!
@steevc, I really appreciate this post.
It's useless to get so many followers that don't interact with your article.
On the Tsu site I had thousands of followers, but it meant nothing as only a few ever commented. Your comments are appreciated
Maybe Steemit could need a RSS-feed for each profile, that way you could group the profiles yourself in a reader... :)
I think there are people providing RSS feeds for Steemit. Could be for a profile or a tag, but maybe need to filter on multiple features.
Yes, with all the data available should be possible for everybody to create.
Your post make a lot of sense to me. I am following fewer people as I am new here but I still have not had time to read most post from them and also curate. I am still just looking around and learning about Steemit and it is time consuming enough. I am happy to hear that even older Steemians are still having fun and it is not only about the money. Keep on Steeming on!!!
When I started I hardly made anything so it had to be fun. My time is limited, so I will carry on doing what keeps it fun
In total agreement :)
I wrote about this same thing 8 months ago.
Could not agree more.
I've dropped a few people I followed early on. Most of them are doing okay anyway.
We all should follow good account not all account
I'm the same way. I can't possibly follow everyone who follows me. But I'll gladly follow a new user for a while and then let them go if their posts don't appeal enough to me.
On Busy.org there's also a separate "favorites" list that I keep some extra users in, that post about interesting things but not what I want to keep in my feed.
@steevc, Early on i made a follow me, i follow back post. Ended up with a buch of garbage followers that i then followed and dont habe anything in common with. Big mistake, now gotta go through and unfollow quite a few. What you have suggested here is the way to go. Nest to grow organically with people yoy have a common interest with.
We all know my posts are the only ones worth following anyway. The rest are all just flotsam and jetsam. :-)

Follow me you will get a bucket of gold delivered right to your door step in the morning..
How could I resist? ;)
You cant, follow me and be richer beyond your wildest dreams...
Only peps looking for making $$$ follow as many as they can.
Quality members focus on Quality, not quantity .
Ps. I do the exact same.
They may find they don't make that much. They will miss out on some of the experience. I've made friends here and I would rather talk to a few of them than try to vote on hundreds of posts each day. Have fun
Couldn't agree more.
Especially that they will not be successful that way. ($$$)
Genuin and quality is what pays $$ ... And THAT can't be faked.
Ps. Love how this platform sort out that issue by itself.
I've actually seen less spam here than on some sites that are actually moderated. I think that shows Steemit really works without central control
Its quite amazing .. And i love it!
I.e people who are init for the $$$ will fail.
While people who are init for the fundamentals ... Will do well.
KARMA by definition. XD
It is your assumption that only you make good posts ..
I think u overreacted on this ..
No one asks from u to follow right ..so
I'm just saying what I think. I see such comments most days, but not always on my posts
Not a complaint, but just an observation: I have 782 followers, but I never get more than 120 upvotes, and that's on a good day, with a full moon, having danced around an oak tree while chanting esoteric mantras.
Apparently, a majority of my followers don't like my content much or can't be arsed to curate. Fair enough, but why are they following me then?
Again, not a complaint, I'm just curious about how this works.
A lot will follow in hope that you follow back and they won't even look at your posts. Just ignore them and focus on those who do vote and comment. Most of mine don't vote either, but I don't really care
I get it. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents. I'm new and although it is exciting to watch your account grow for me it's about getting out there and meeting new people. Getting involved in the community and seeing just who plays a part in being active with you day in and day out. I'm also more of a surfing commenter more so than a blog poster at this point so I run into, or so it would seem, lots of interesting folks that I enjoy revisiting. Maybe things will change as I develop and grow here maybe not. Enjoyed though, made me use my noggin'.
Don't follow me, you can't handle my TRUTH.
All drummers are encouraged to follow though
Thanks
Great post, I concur wholeheartedly. You might wanna edit your Sig though. I don't think you can mine Steem anymore.
I still see Steem on Eobot, but you need to mine a lot to cash out
great point.. we want to engage for sure :)
I finally had to cut back on the number of people I follow as well. 400? That's getting close to pushing it for me. I definitely follow my friends, and then anyone beyond that has to earn my attention.
When I want a drink of water, I don't want this:
Oh man. I've made so many posts about follow begging lately. It's actually damaging to new users. They don't understand how the system works yet and they're doing what they do on Facebook or Twitter without knowing the repercussions.
:/
Instagram even. But I'm starting to notice something. Many many of these don't seem to be English speaking and possibly bots or bot-like. Are "established" social media accounts still sold "under the table"?... I'm thinking yes. I'm thinking, "yes, I've seen this pattern before for a reason."
Guess they just have to learn it the hard way, Ragequit, and then label steem as ponzi cos they don't make money while others do.
Some people will not learn. Others we try to get them right as early as possible.
I'm already having a hard time following 170+ people.
It pisses me off when I spend hours on a post and someone comes in, does and ctrl+v and goes "great, now follow me". When it took me half of my day not doing anything else but put my time in on comments giving real thoughtful opinions (it's tiring after some time, but I don't complain) and going on chat to really help people out, get my name out.
Low efforts yield low results. I totally understand and agree where you are coming from.
I think this makes sense. You gotta earn the right to be followed by demonstrating long term engagement and not being a TABLOID STEEMER. Feel free to check my blog to read:

Thank you for upvoting my photo. If you like that one you will love my other ones. https://steemit.com/@readallaboutit
