Science at home! Fun homemade experiments for the little ones. Today we will learn about Sodium Hypochlorite!

in #steempress5 years ago (edited)

Hello friends of @steemiteducation, the education of our children is extremely important and we, as parents, have the responsibility to ensure that this is the best possible and not just leave this task to the teachers.

Through the experiments at home, we can teach our children certain concepts of science that otherwise seem boring.

Today we will work what Sodium Hypochlorite is and we will use it in an experiment that will demonstrate what it is for and what function it has.

It is important to emphasize that this substance is harmful to health and that it must be out of the reach of children and avoid contact with the skin.

Before starting the Experiment it is necessary that we review the terminology so that our children understand what we are going to work with.

What is the Sodium Hypochlorite?

This chemical compound is a strong oxidizing agent in liquid form and is greenish or yellowish in color. It is commonly known as bleach because it is the active ingredient in bleach.

Now if we go with the experiment!

Materials:

  • Three pieces of cardboard of the colors that you prefer.
  • A brush
  • A glass
  • A little bleach or chlorine. (sodium hypochlorite).

Procedures:

  • Place a little bleach in the glass and with the brush mark "x" on the colored cards and wait a few minutes while it dries.
  • You will notice that the lye eats the colors or degrades them leaving the mark of the "X" in white.

What happened?

Bleach is a solution of sodium hypochlorite in water that is usually used at home for cleaning and disinfection.

Sodium hypochlorite is able to oxidize the substances responsible for the colors causing them to change color and, in some cases, can completely discolour (this is what happens with our colored cards).

Bleach can be used to remove some stains due to its bleaching power, but it can also ruin clothing if it is used frequently and it is best to use commercial products that bring the proper concentration and instructions for use.

Children love to do experiments. With them, while they have fun, they learn and ask questions about the world around them. Among its many benefits, scientific exploration, feeding, the child's natural curiosity, encouragement, stimulation, reasoning and logic, improving the ability to solve problems, improving self-esteem and preparing for understanding , understanding, understanding. Future It is not necessary to enjoy science to have a laboratory, be surprised by the amount of experiments that can be done with some materials made at home. So there's nothing else, get in touch with work and have fun with your children or students. I hope this article has been of interest and help, and I hope in my next post.
