Increase the volume of a quiet track in Reaper (or any other DAW)

Let's say you've recorded a podcast episode and the volume of your guest's voice is just way to quiet. The track fader will only give you so much gain. So what other ways are there to increase the volume of a quiet track in Reaper?

There's two ways I can think of to approach this and they will work in any Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

Increase volume using Makeup Gain

Assuming you've already compressed your guest's voice to "smooth out the bumps", you can add back some volume by using Makeup Gain on the compressor for the guest's track.

Most compressors will have an Output, Gain or Makeup Gain option of some sort, here's some examples from a couple of the compressors you can find on my article: 50+ free 64bit VST plugins for Mac and Windows (2020)

Increase volume using a Limiter on the Master track

This may seem counter intuitive, but using this method, you would bring the volume of the host track down to meet the volume of the guest track and then drop a limiter (such as George Yohng's W1 Limiter) on the Master track to bring the overall volume of both tracks up to where you'd like it. For example:

So there's two ways we can increase the volume of a quiet track in reaper, without using the track fader.

I hope this works for you. If you have any other methods that might help readers, please let us know in the comments.
