En este miniBoletín presentaré varias características morfológicas y de comportamiento del Azulejo, una especie de ave del Género Thraupis de plumas no brillantes y algo opacas con colores gris, verde y el característico azul, color con el cual se asocia el nombre de esta ave. Este pájaro es originario del continente americano, habita específicamente en varios países de América Central y gran parte de América del Sur hasta el Perú.
In this mini-Newsletter I will present several morphological and behavioral characteristics of the Azulejo, a bird species of the Genus Thraupis with non-shiny and somewhat opaque feathers with gray, green and the characteristic blue colors , color with which the name of this bird is associated. This bird is native to the American continent, it lives specifically in several countries of Central America and a large part of South America up to Peru.
Es considerado un pájaro de canto y extiende sus alas para emitir su peculiar sonido sobre todo en las mañanas y cuando hace el llamado a sus crías también emite sonidos más ruidosos. El nombre científico de esta Especie Thraupis episcopus se corresponde con un espécimen de Azulejo que tuve como mascota durante mis años de niño, cuando llegó al árbol de aguacates y lo llevé a mi cuarto después de atraparlo fácilmente entre mis manos. Luego de unos meses conviviendo en mi hogar logró recuperar su libertad y ser una criatura más en el ecosistema rural.
It is considered a song bird and spreads its wings to emit its peculiar sound, especially in the mornings, and when it calls its young it also emits louder sounds. The scientific name of this Species Thraupis episcopus corresponds to a specimen of Azulejo that I had as a pet during my childhood years, when it came to the avocado tree and I took it to my room after easily trapping it between my hands. After a few months living in my home, he managed to regain his freedom and be one more creature in the rural ecosystem.
En Venezuela, Colombia y otros países vecinos (tropicales) se acostumbra llamarlos Pájaros o aves sonoras, por lo que están catalogadas en el Orden Passeriformes. El canto tiene un tono característico, pero es muy corto por lo que no clasifica dentro de las "aves melodiosas". Lo que sí se ha ganado es el título aborigen de Brasil como Tangara por su peculiar ritual de baile cuando canta, abre sus alas y las bate rítmicamente al son de su canto.
In Venezuela, Colombia and other neighboring (tropical) countries it is customary to call them Pájaros or sound birds, which is why they are cataloged in the Order Passeriformes. The song has a characteristic tone, but it is very short so it does not classify within the "melodious birds". What it has earned is the aboriginal title of Brazil as Tangara for its peculiar dance ritual when it sings, opens its wings and beats them rhythmically to the sound of its song.
El tamaño promedio oscila entre los 15 cm y 20 cm de largo, con un dimorfismo sexual resaltado en los colores de sus plumas en la cola y alas, con un matizado del color azul. El pico de estas aves suele ser muy corto, algo grueso, pero bastante fuerte y robusto para poder picotear a saltamontes, grillos, orugas y sin dejar de lado los mangos y cambures que encuentren disponibles para su dieta diaria.
The average size ranges between 15 cm and 20 cm in length, with a sexual dimorphism highlighted in the colors of its tail and wing feathers, with a shade of blue. The beak of these birds is usually very short, somewhat thick, but strong and robust enough to be able to peck at grasshoppers, crickets, caterpillars and without neglecting the mangoes and bananas that they find available for their daily diet.
