Reading is one of the most important tools in life

I use to love reading, not that I don’t still but time is the problem.  When I was a child I think the most fights at the table from my dad was, that I could not put my book down and read while eating. Later I realised just eat fast and you can go back to the book. When my kids were babies this was also difficult because they always wanted to talk to you and play, so I sat them down nicely each with something nice to eat, and I would read my book out loud to them. They were still babies so did not understand a word, but enjoyed it tremendously. Today my daughter still loves reading, my son is so busy I don’t think he gets time but I still remember giving him the book Kane and Able to read.  He just could not put it down and I knew just how he felt.

As a child my dad used to buy me the Readers Digest magazine, I read it from front to back and kept them because they always had these wonderful stories in them. Even at this age I remember the one about an old lady who lived alone and was very precise with all her things as she was blind. One day she was sitting at her kitchen table feeling on her watch what the time was and and the watch fell off her arm. She knelt down under the table, feeling around for the watch but could not find it. She got up and bumped her head very hard against the table. She sat for a few minutes and to her surprize she started seeing. She was very poor and could not afford a doctor.  In those days eye surgery was not as easy as today. When she called her neighbour she said: “I can see!” Wow how wonderful her neighbour said,  how did this happen?

She told her about bumping her head so hard looking for her watch. After sitting still for a few minutes she realised she started seeing. Her neighbour said we must find out how and she took her to the doctor. He told them that the bump had moved the cataracts in her eye and that was the reason she could see.

This was one of my favourite stories, and probably the reason why I still remember it. I think it is so sad if people don’t read anymore. My mother in-law drives us around the bend sometimes, but I get books for her in the library and that keeps her quiet for a while. She is 95 and still read without glasses. The books I get her are written in large letters. I cannot tell you how much it helps that the library gets these books for the older people. They are the best.

Reading will take you to different places and makes you live different lives. Thanks for sharing this. :)

I wonder how people lived way, way back then when humans had not developed a system for writing. Reading is crucial nowadays. How else would we exchange and record ideas?

Interesting they drew pictures and when there were to many they started the alphabet. Very clever thank you

I like reading because real life sucks :)

Reading is great! Im reading now the name of wind...loving it! 100% recomendable!

Yes it does help. Libraries are awesome. Thanks for sharing!

I love reading too :) I believe that people who read books often, not only have good communication skills, but they are also thinkers and have an open mind. They are also much less ignorant.

Yes, I too think reading is one of life's most wonderful little pleasures. Especially so for children's developing minds and imaginations, and then again for the elderly for whom reading may be one of the few activities they can do that keeps their minds and hearts engaged. For those of us in between, isn't it such a treat to settle into a comfy chair with a good book? In fact, I have a few sitting on my shelf right now that I'm hoping to get to!

Thanks for reading.

100% agree.

Thank you so much :)

Will do thank you

I love reading. And nowadays I do much of my reading with an e-book reader.

But books are still books, no matter what the medium is.

I treat books as something that can't be replaced by all those blog posts, various articles, video, Steemit posts, and whatever digital contents on the Internet.

The nice thing about e-books u can switch the light off and bother no one.

library is one of my favorite places to spend time :)
great post

One of the tricks I like to use when I am very busy, is to speed up the reading speed or the speaking speed. I use moonreader for android. It lets you autoscroll at a speed or can read out loud to you at 2x or 3x the speed.

Yes, books and pencils are our first tools to learn.

Excellent work Ursula ,thank you for sharing

It is a shame that people read less. My mom also take out the big print books at Port Edward. She read about 10 books a week. I think one of this days they won't have any books there that she had not read. Thank you for the post!

I also loved reading but now due to internet everyone has forgotten it.

Actually so sad, but even if you can not read you wont be able to use internet.

Literacy rates were much higher in America at the beginning of the 20th century. Centralized educational systems have destroyed reading. A book is a way to read a persons entire life in a matter of hours. Books are life changing. They'll always be around but will be read by fewer and fewer people.

So true and so sad thanks for reading my post
