Appeal To Authority

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES

What if people were held accountable for the things they say online, especially from the pedestal of authority? During the weeks preceding the Bitcoin halving, I saw multiple ads on YouTube about how on a given day, the "biggest financial event of all time was going to happen, .... click here (and eventually buy our product) and be a part of it".

When the time came, and nothing happened, the ads simply disappeared. No explanation of why said event didn't occur. More interestingly, nobody cared that these self-proclaimed "gurus" were wrong, again!

You can tell nobody cares because, of course, the gurus are back again now saying something different. Same voices, same faces on ads saying "for sure this is going to happen".

The gurus know how this works. They know that nobody remembers how many times they've been wrong in the past. They know about the very short attention spans of their would be followers. They also know about confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance, and they play these instruments like a fine flute and a fiddle.

People generally don't want to hear the truth. They rather just want their worldview confirmed back to them. I do it too sometimes, being human, but I try as much as possible to catch myself doing it and actively engage cognitively.

What if people held gurus accountable and pushed back? What if the next time someone tells you for the 24th time where to spend your money, or what to do with you life, having misdirected you for the past times, you hold their feet to the fire?

Peace & Love,

Adé
