Greetings friends of #facinatinginsects this time I will show you this beautiful butterfly that I managed to take some pictures before taking flight, it had a kind of eye drawn on its wings, when I saw it I went out to get my cell phone to take some pictures and show them to you.
It is an owl butterfly (Caligo eurilochus) belonging to the Nymphalidae family. There are about 20 species of this beautiful butterfly in Ecuador, it is common to find it in South America and part of southern Mexico, the mountains are its habitat as well as the forest. This butterfly reaches a wingspan of approximately 20 cm, which makes it an easy target for predators. Its eyes on the wings confuse predators, as they hesitate to attack it, when it is attacked it usually receives attacks on the wings, having eyes on the wings, all attacks are directed to that area. This butterfly flies much lower than normal, as it does so to reduce its sighting by predators.
Saludos amigos de #facinatinginsects esta vez les mostraré esta hermosa mariposa que logré tomar algunas fotos antes de emprender el vuelo, tenía una especie de ojo dibujado en sus alas, cuando la vi salí a buscar mi celular para tomar algunas fotos y mostrárselas.
Es una mariposa búho (Caligo eurilochus) perteneciente a la familia Nymphalidae. Existen alrededor de 20 especies de esta hermosa mariposa en Ecuador, es común encontrarla en Sudamérica y parte del sur de México, las sierras son su hábitat al igual que el bosque. Esta mariposa alcanza una envergadura de aproximadamente 20 cm, lo que la convierte en un blanco fácil para los depredadores. Sus ojos en las alas confunden a los depredadores, ya que dudan en atacarla, cuando es atacada suele recibir ataques en las alas, al tener ojos en las alas, todos los ataques se dirigen a esa zona. Esta mariposa vuela mucho más bajo de lo normal, ya que lo hace para reducir su avistamiento por parte de los depredadores.
