When she was in high school, our literature teacher always gave us advice before starting a reading: "Let the books understand them," she said, with a smile that smelled of metaphors. It is easy to immerse yourself in the world that the letters outline, however, it is difficult to understand everything that is hidden behind. Beyond the message, the characters and the pages, there is a being with a life of its own, a little voice that speaks to us and teaches us a complete universe of realities that exceed the dimension of imagination. A book is a life, however impossible this statement may seem. Why? Simple: because it is in it where we discover that essence that defines us, contextualizes us, makes us feel alive.
Cuando estudiaba bachillerato, nuestra profesora de literatura nos daba siempre un consejo antes de comenzar alguna lectura: “Permitan que los libros los entiendan” decía, con una sonrisa que olía a metáforas. Es fácil sumergirse en el mundo que las letras esbozan, sin embargo, es difícil entender todo lo que se oculta detrás. Más allá del mensaje, los personajes y las páginas, existe un ser con vida propia, una vocecita que nos habla y nos enseña un universo completo de realidades que sobrepasan la dimensión de la imaginación. Un libro es una vida, por muy imposible que parezca esta afirmación. ¿Por qué? Sencillo: porque es en él donde descubrimos esa esencia que nos define, nos contextualiza, nos hace sentir vivos.

When you read, what do you feel? An instant harmony, an infinite freedom that transports us to an unknown universe. We suffer, we cry, we laugh, we clap and we sigh… each emotion is nuanced from the depths of our hearts to feed our intellect. We change the perception of things, inspired by that character or that metaphor that comes from history, opinion or even science. A book is knowledge, culture, and history; a book is art... a book is another form of love.
Cuando lees, ¿qué sientes? Una armonía instantánea, una libertad infinita que nos transporta a un universo desconocido. Sufrimos, lloramos, reímos, aplaudimos y suspiramos… cada emoción se matiza desde lo profundo de nuestro corazón para alimentar nuestro intelecto. Cambiamos la percepción de las cosas, inspirados por ese personaje o esa metáfora que proviene de la historia, la opinión o incluso la ciencia. Un libro es conocimiento, cultura, e historia; un libro es arte… un libro es otra forma de amor.

Understanding a book is connecting with intellectual thought, with the abstract subjectivity of ideas within us. Stories connect us, whatever the genre, and open a deep debate in the subconscious. We interpret reality, first disarming it and then assembling it under a new concept. That page structure and square covers are more than just entertainment. We explore in each word to understand that difficult, paradoxical, unpredictable and extremely wild world. We establish a connection, an internal dialogue where the rest of the universe disappears. It is as André Maurois once said:
Entender un libro es conectarse con el pensamiento intelectual, con la subjetividad abstracta de las ideas en nuestro interior. Las historias nos conectan, sea cual sea el género, y abren un debate profundo en el subconsciente. Interpretamos la realidad, primero desarmándola y luego armándola bajo un nuevo concepto. Esa estructura de páginas y cubiertas cuadradas son más que simple entretenimiento. Exploramos en cada palabra para entender ese mundo difícil, paradójico, impredecible y sumamente salvaje. Entablamos una conexión, un dialogo interno donde el resto del universo desaparece. Es como lo dijo alguna vez André Maurois:

Maurois is right, there is a language between the reader and the book; Does that voice that we hear has its own strength? Maybe yes, maybe there will be a third after reading. We are not crazy, much less exaggerating when saying that books speak, or listen, or feel. Reading is living, it's that simple. Why hide our inspiration? Why fear that part of the world that yearns to destroy reading? Perhaps they see us as a Don Quixote, and although we are absolved in an invented madness, we are capable of looking at wonders where everything seems dark. We do not follow idealisms, because we sketch our own. We broaden the perception of reality, and we sketch a freedom capable of enlightening us. In short, everything makes sense before our eyes.
Maurois tiene razón, hay un lenguaje entre el lector y el libro; ¿a caso esa voz que escuchamos tiene fuerza propia? Tal vez sí, quizás haya un tercero tras la lectura. No estamos locos, ni mucho menos exageramos al decir que los libros hablan, o escuchan, o sienten. Leer es vivir, así de sencillo. ¿Por qué ocultar nuestra inspiración? ¿Por qué temer a esa parte del mundo que anhela destruir la lectura? Quizás nos vean como un Don quijote, y aunque estamos absueltos en una locura inventada, somos capaces de mirar maravillas donde todo parece oscuro. No seguimos idealismos, porque esbozamos los nuestros. Ampliamos la percepción de la realidad, y bosquejamos una libertad capaz de iluminarnos. En resumen, todo cobra sentido ante nuestros ojos.
The passion for books is unique and irreplaceable. We do not feel empty or lonely, because the stories we read accompany us with each beat of our heart; We learn from the blunders of our favorite characters, and we sigh as we interpret the great lesson that qualifies the message behind the premise. We also immerse ourselves in motivation, driven by great personalities who yearn for the happiness of the world. And not to mention the lyrics and poetry books, as majestic as the power of the word.
La pasión por los libros es única e irremplazable. No nos sentimos vacios o solitarios, porque las historias que leemos nos acompañan con cada latir de nuestro carrazón; aprendemos de los garrafales errores de nuestros personajes favoritos, y suspiramos al interpretar la gran lección que matiza el mensaje tras la premisa. También nos sumergimos en la motivación, impulsada por grandes personalidades que anhelan la felicidad del mundo. Y ni hablar de las liricas y los poemarios, tan majestuosos como el poder de la palabra.

To understand a book is to understand oneself, because only in the connection between the letters and the mind will there be that indestructible force that will motivate us to explore our inner voice; the one that needs to feed on new experiences, vigorous stories and a universe where limitations do not exist. I still remember my high school teacher and her recommendation before our readings: "that of understanding the book." For this, there must be an intimate dialogue between what we read and what we interpret. It is not enough just to look at sentences, because the essence of a story lies in the strength of our perception.
Entender un libro es entenderse a uno mismo, pues solo en la conexión entre las letras y la mente habrá esa fuerza indestructible que nos motivará a explorar nuestra voz interior; esa que necesita alimentarse de experiencias nuevas, de historias vigorosas y de un universo donde las limitaciones no existen. Aun recuerdo a mi profesora de bachillerato y su recomendación antes de nuestras lecturas: “eso de entender al libro”. Para ello, debe haber un dialogo intimo entre lo que leemos y lo que interpretamos. No basta solo con mirar frases, pues la esencia de una historia radica en el vigor de nuestra percepción.
We are natural readers, even by writing simple letters we are designing our own story. When you read, you listen to yourself, you appreciate yourself, you feel alive. A book is a door to freedom, we feel free! And right there, no one will be able to stop the will of your spirit.
Somos lectores natos, incluso al escribir letras sencillas estamos diseñando nuestra propia historia. Cuando lees, te escuchas, te aprecias, te sientes vivo. Un libro es una puerta a la libertad ¡nos sentimos libres! Y justamente allí, nadie podrá detener la voluntad de tu espíritu.
