As I had no intention of using it for the purpose for which it was intended, I was convinced that a coat of chalk paint after a superficial sanding would be more than enough for the use I intended to give it: as a picture display stand.
Ahora sé que cometí un error. Los fabricantes de pintura a la tiza te indican que puedes usarla directamente sobre la superficie lisa, sin necesidad de imprimación previa. Ahora lo hubiese hecho de modo bien diferente: un buen lijado, hidratación, vuelta a lijar, imprimación, de nuevo un lijado, mano de pintura, lijado, otra mano de pintura y un último lijado fino.

Now I would have done it quite differently: a good sanding, moisturising, sanding again, priming, sanding again, a coat of paint, sanding, another coat of paint and a final fine sanding.
Así lo dejé, y así ha estado durante una década, hasta que el otro día decidí meterle mano. Lo desmontaría de nuevo y haría las cosas como ya he aprendido que se tienen que hacer: le daría un buen lijado y el acabado esta vez sería un encerado, para dejar ver la madera que acompañó a mi madre tantos años y que vi envejecer en casa.
Ahora cuento con un par de lijadoras eléctricas que me ayudarán en mi tarea, y tengo el espacio suficiente y los materiales necesarios para realizar el proyecto. Ya tengo herrajes nuevos, que sustituirán los antiguos oxidados. No encontré todas las piezas, aunque he adquirido similares, que quedarán igualmente bien. El par de pletinas que abren la "pata" trasera del caballete no la conseguí, así que lijé las originales y las pinté con una acrílica dorada. No es lo mismo, pero no encontré otra opción.

I now have a couple of electric sanders that will help me in my task, and I have enough space and the necessary materials to carry out the project. I already have new hardware, which will replace the old rusty ones. I couldn't find all the parts, although I have acquired similar ones, which will look just as good. The pair of plates that open the rear "leg" of the stand I couldn't get, so I sanded the originals and painted them with a gold acrylic. It's not the same, but I couldn't find another option.
