La inadecuada ingesta de nutrientes como proteínas, impide un correcto desarrollo y crecimiento del niño, la consecuencia de la poca ingesta de alimentos energéticos y proteínicos influye en bajo peso del infante. Por lo que conlleva a ciertas trastornos como lo es la desnutrición siendo esta la primera causa de muertes en niños pequeños.
Uno de los tipos de desnutrición en el infante es el Kwashiorkor, se caracteriza por un baja ingesta tanto proteínas como de otros nutrientes importantes, entre los principales signos y síntomas que puede presentar encontramos alteraciones cutáneas, hipoalbuminemia, trastornos hidroelectrolíticos, edema que principalmente se debe a la disminución de albumina a nivel plasmático, hepatomegalia, en estos pacientes existe poco masa muscular, bajo peso, otro de los signos característicos es la anemia, entre otras más.
En el paciente con Kwashiorkor el sistema inmune puede estar debilitado, lo que contribuye a la aparición de ciertas infecciones, esta afección puede ocasionar ciertas complicaciones en los órganos vitales como a nivel cardiovascular y renal.
Cabe destacar que el tratamiento principalmente se basa en suplementos nutricionales e hidratación, con el fin de corregir las deficiencias.
