El gran tamaño e intensidad de color de sus flores hacen destacar a esta planta. Recien está floreciendo y aunque la mayoría de los botones florales permanecen aún cerrados, encontré flores dispersas en las zonas altas del arco calizo malagueño.
The great size and color intensity of its flowers make this plant stand out. It is just blooming and although most of the flower buds are still closed, I found flowers scattered in the high areas of the Malaga limestone arch.
Su nombre científico es Paeonia coriacea y se conoce vulgarmente como rosa maldita, rosa de la sierra o peonía. Existe una especie muy similar, la Paeonia broteri, la cual, entre otras diferencias, no crece a la altitud de los ejemplares encontrados en esta publicación.
Its scientific name is Paeonia coriacea and it is commonly known as rosa maldita, rosa de la sierra or peony. There is a very similar species, Paeonia broteri, which, among other differences, does not grow at the altitude of the specimens found in this publication.
La reina del bosque en esta época del año aparece ante nuestros ojos, vislumbrándose a lo lejos rodeada de verde. Su belleza es tal que eclipsa la floración de otras más humildes como jaras, aulagas o gamones.
The queen of the forest at this time of the year appears before our eyes, glimpsed in the distance surrounded by green. Its beauty is such that it eclipses the flowering of other more humble plants such as rockroses, gorse or chamois.
Desconozco la procedencia del apelativo "maldita". Tiene algún uso medicinal, aunque seguramente su toxicidad tenga algo que ver con este adjetivo.
I do not know the origin of the name "cursed". It has some medicinal use, although surely its toxicity has something to do with this adjective.
Como siempre, pediros concienciación sobre la recolección de sus flores. No lo hagáis, os durará poco y estaréis dejando el bosque un poco más huérfano en colores.
As always, I ask you to be conscientious about collecting its flowers. Do not do it, it will not last long and you will be leaving the forest a little more orphaned in colors.
