Igualeja is a small town hidden in the heart of the Serranía de Ronda where the Genal River is born.

The economy of this town is based on chestnut agriculture, generating an important production of chestnuts, offering many hiking trails between holm oaks and chestnut trees above all.
La economía de este pueblo está basada en la agricultura del castaño, generando una importante producción de castañas,ofreciendo muchas rutas de senderismo entre encinas y castaños sobre todo.
Every year many families go out at the beginning of autumn to collect this fruit, abundant in the variety that is popularly known as ‘pilonga’ that receives this name because of the ease it has to peel (remove the skin behind the peel).
Cada año muchas familias salen en el inicio del otoño a recoger este fruto, abundando la variedad que se conoce popularmente como ‘pilonga’ que recibe este nombre por la facilidad que tiene para pelarse (quitar la piel que hay tras la cáscara).
Following the trails, some of them are signposted, we can stop to collect chestnuts, although we must bear in mind that they are on private farms and you cannot cross the fences, although we have plenty of them on the ground that we can collect with gloves.
Siguiendo los senderos, algunos están señalizados podemos parar a recoger castañas aunque hay que tener en cuenta que están en fincas privadas y no se puede atravesar las vallas aunque en el suelo tenemos cantidad de ellas que podremos recoger con unos guantes.
Finally after about five hours of walking we have our precious reward, five kilos of chestnuts!
