Could King Charles slim down the Royal family by removing titles?

In 2019, the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, removed titles from five of his grandchildren. Only the two children of Crown Princess Victoria retained the right to be called princess and prince.

The loss of titles meant a loss of taxpayer money for those grandchildren, and they won't be required to do royal duties. King Carl XVI Gustaf acted pre-emptively, as there were rumblings of discontent in the Swedish parliament at the size of the royal family. Sweden's population is only 10.3 million. Carl XVI Gustaf's family accepted his decision with good grace, there was not even a murmer of dissent.

Last week, Queen Margrethe of Denmark decided to do the same thing. She removed the titles of prince and princess from four of her grandchildren. Only the children of Crown Prince Frederik have retained their titles.

Unfortunately things haven't gone as smoothly as in Sweden.

Queen Margrethe's second son, Prince Joachim, has been protesting loudly - it's his four children who've lost their titles. Danish society is torn between agreeing with the decision (does a country of 5 million need this many princes and princesses?), and sympathy for Prince Joachim's children, for whom the loss of titles came as a shock.

Which brings us to our own King Charles. He's long been known to favour slimming down the British royal family. This may involve removing titles from Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and Prince Harry.

He'll have been watching the uproar in Denmark with dismay. Because it's an inkling of the uproar he'll face from Prince Andrew and Prince Harry when he removes them from the British royal family.
