У нинішніх реаліях неможливо знайти авто на якому не буде встановлено підсилювача керма. Всі сучасні авто мають у своїй конструкції підсилювач, але на кожному він свій.
Всього є два типи підсилювачів, це гідравлічний підсилювач керма (ГПК) та електричний (ЕПК).
Першим звичайно почав встановлюватись ГПК. Це досить простий пристрій, який працює в результаті перекачування рідини (гідравлічного масла). Але гідравлічне масло повинно щось перекачувати, для цього встановлюється гідравлічний насос, який приєднаний до двигуна жорстко або через ремінь. Гідравлічний насос, як додатковий елемент конструкції двигуна віднімає у нього трішки потужності, що погано впливає на динаміку та економічність. Щоб гідравлічний насос не відбирав потужності у двигуна, то двигун має бути дость велико об'єму та мати великий запас потужності.
Але сучасні виробники все чаще встановлюють у свої авто мололітражні двигуни для яких гідравлічний насос точно буде тяжістю. Тому і було розроблено ЕПК, який ніяк не з'єднаний з двигуно та не знижує його потужності. Сам ЕПК являє собою електро двигун, який встановлено на рульовий вал та допомагє водію обертати рульове колесо (кермо).
ЕПК має досить вагомі переваги над ГПК і це не лише економічність та простота, а ще й додатковий комфорт. Так як ЕПК має два а інколи і більше режимів роботи. Наприклад, якщо ЕПК має два режими, то його сила з якою він допомагає обертати кермо прямо залежить від швидкості руху. Якщо Ви рухаєтесь по місту з невеликою швидкістю то ЕПК допомагає Вам сильніше, а якщо рухаєтесь за містом з більшою швидкістю, то ЕПК допомагає меньше. ЕПК в залежності від його харектеристики та комплектації авто також може створювати додатковий супротив на керму, це наприклад в режимі спорт, щоб водій краще відчував вз'язок з колесами та дорогою.
Є також і відміність між ГПК та ЕПК і вона полягає в тому, що ГПК лише допомагає водію обертати кермо, не поглинаючи колійність та недоліки в дорожньому покритті. Навідміну від ГПК ЕПК робить із авто якусь іграшку. У звичайному режимі керуючи авто з ЕПК Ви не буде відчувати ні недоліків у дорожньому покритті, ні супротиву колес з коліями, Ви просто будите їхати і насолоджуватись.
