PC Performance - Storage Goes Faster

in #tech4 years ago

The computing space is always evolving but it’s not often that I find myself needing to upgrade my main workstation. I typically use my main computer for media editing and the occasional game here and there. At a time where computing components had soared for one reason or another, some companies were able to offer custom built computers for cheaper than self-built. It’s been another few years and the time to seek out my next upgrade is fast coming as I find myself using demanding tasks in concurrent use and the performance gains on the upcoming architecture is certainly worth noting. I’ve mentioned in previous blogs that new connectivity standards, CPU and GPU releases will bring in a new wave of computing performance. With PC gaming seemingly ready to explode alongside the next generation of consoles due to common architecture, there are many reasons to hold off on getting that new shiny rig for a while yet.

One of the biggest revelations of the Sony PlayStation 5’s is its SSD technology. We all love and use SSD’s in our rigs but the approach to gaming performance for zero load times certainly brings something new to the table. Common architecture and technology between consoles and PC’s seems to be a step closer as PCIe 4.0 and Samsung’s new 980 Pro SSD will be unleashing a new level of storage performance. PCIe 4.0 have been around since last year but 2020 will be the year where the extra bandwidth will finally make a difference for those wanting to move on to new computing architecture. Sequential write and read speeds will be hitting phenomenal levels and I can’t wait to see the benchmarks hit the internet as Samsung are supposedly going to be releasing the blazingly fast SSD in August.

Summer leading into next year might be the time to splash some cash if you’re in the market for something new. With Navi coming within the next year, ddr5 RAM is just around the corner too. The arrival of Ryzen 5000 CPU’s and new generation of smartphones will most likely see an entire new generation of computing performance. It’s certainly something that I have been anticipating for a number of years as all components and specs seem to be aligning. For those not in a hurry it would be wise to wait as teething issues are most likely to arise in the months to come but hopefully technology is at a stage where both software and hardware get it right from the get go.
