Dolling Up

in #theterminal4 years ago

I had been attempting for the past few days to post on my phone. I do not know what exactly happened but, here I am.

I am aware that I have really never made some doll figurines in my blogs. First of all, I do not have the clay that would suit my purpose- either the clay are too hard or, they are too soft that I cannot make a find detail. It is really frustrating to be spending a lot of time making fine details when they can be easily squished/ deformed even before baking. So here is my first doll- its not realistic- just a chibi one.

Speaking of clay, I just want to let you guys know that I have an amazing time using Sullivan polymer clay. As far as I am concerned, its the only clay in Australia that met all my "requirements."

When doing this it is important to select the color of the clay you will be using. Pre condition/ soften them.

There are many ways on how to start doing a sculpture. Since I am using polymer clay as a medium, I started from the bottom because I needed to make sure that the bottom will be able to support the rest of the piece. I am not going to be talking about making reinforcements/ wirings/ support for sculpture here. I did not plan to have a complicated piece but simply something that I can place by my window and make me smile why I work on my desk.

Make the detail for the lower limbs.

There are many ways to make/ design skirts. I personally have a lot of ways of doing it but the main consideration is the position/ posture of your figurine.

Blend the skirt. Then attach another wire for the upper body.

Plan the upper limbs. Do you want a sleeve, what design do you have in mind? Will the figurine wear gloves, jewelry, etc. These are just basic things that you needed to keep in mind.

It is also important to "pre cut" everything to make sure that they are proportional to each other.

Make the details of the hands. Again, there are many ways on doing these. Some will use push molds while others "sculpt." I belong to the last group.

Make the head.

I intentionally include this part. I want to show you guys that I do make mistakes doing this and, I also struggle to make up my mind. The beauty for this type of medium is that, I can "take back" my mistake and start all over again.

You will notice in the final product that the lips were simply sculpted. I was really tired yesterday and, I find making lips is challenging.

Attach the head to the rest of the body.

Attach a pink clay at the back of the head. This is the "base" for the hair. Whatever color you choose for your hair should match the "base" unless you're going for the ombre effect.

There is a saying that making figurines requires passionate patience. For the hair detail, believe it or not, it took me more than 1 hour to make the detail. I have to individually curl, attach, re attach, fix(those who had fallen/ lost their detail).

I shaved a bit of soft pastel to serve as a blush on for my doll. Yes. You can literally apply a "make up."

Done. This is the pre baked doll. I am now curing it with resin and, I will show you guys how it looks after.

I hope you enjoy this. I miss writing but, as I have been saying before, duty calls first.

Wow, that looks incredible. So many pieces of all shapes and colours. The hair seems to be the most tricky part to do. Excellent work on this doll, Anna! 🤗

Thanks Trin! As I told you it took me AWHILE to make the hai. But its worth it!
