Traditions...

It was really unplanned but the family happened to be in Puerto Rico during one of our favorite days of tradition called The Night of San Juan (Noche de San Juan)! While I really do not know the folklore of the tradition and why it has persisted, I remember the fun and games during the celebration back when I was in High School and College! In summary, groups would get together and go to the beach at night and when the clock hits midnight, everyone would walk backwards into the ocean three times. It is a supposed good luck charm and helps in prosperity!

It is sad that the tradition this year had to be severely altered as Puerto Rico continues to have a curfew for residents where nobody can be out past 10pm unless for permitted reasons and emergencies. This made the authorities close beaches for the tradition which excluded many on the island. Fortunately, our family has a place where there was a pool which is not exactly tradition but was a good alternative.

The island and its residents really do need a break and even though many do not believe on luck, something needs to give. After the worst Hurricane in decades struck the island in 2017 after years of economic recession, the island was slowly recovering and looking positively for changes. Then, the worst earthquakes in a century began and to make things worst, the pandemic. It has been a 2020 to remember for the world but even more so for the island.

However, the great spirits and personalities of the people continue to drive things forward. I have clearly felt change and with these small traditions, you can get a sense of people looking at an optimistic view of things. Not much was heard around the Night of San Juan but a time to celebrate is never hard to avoid while here.

The family had a great time playing dominoes and cards while sharing stories of the past. Before we knew it, it was midnight and we were all taking turns jumping backwards into the pool! No strikes of luck yet but the fact that memories were created have been enough for me as I now head back home. The traditions form us in different ways but experiences are what allow is to grow and develop!
