Located in Athens, The Temple of Olympian Zeus a.k.a The Olympieion began its first round of construction in the 6th century by the tyrant Peisistratos. However, the structure was demolished after Peisistratos' death and his sons Hippias and Hipparchos began construction of the new building a few decades afterward. In 510 BC, work was abandoned when Hippias was overthrown. The temple remained incomplete for hundreds of years. It was finally completed by Roman emperor Hadrian in 131 AD.

As of today, only 15 of the original 104 Corinthian columns stand. With each of the columns measuring 17 metres tall and 1.7 metres wide, the original layout was quite monstrous, making the structure one of the largest built in the ancient world.

My favorite thing to do in Athens was exploring the prominent ruins from ancient times. As someone who has always had a interest in Ancient Greece and architecture, it's grown substantially more because of my boyfriend @joshsigurdson. Experiencing such marvels first-hand is incomparable to just reading about them in books. It's exhilarating standing on the same patch of Earth where such historic figures stood and where history was made. I can only imagine what the terrain looked like all those years ago, and certainly the fully assembled temple. Absolutely remarkable.

Also, I have to add that there were cats everywhere! Anyone else who has visited ancient ruins notice the immense amount of felines that surround those areas? It's interesting and yet, unnerving.
