Day 7 in America: Gordon

in #travel6 years ago

Hi guys

Happy to have you back.
Second part of todays story is waiting for you.

The second part of the day started by going by train to Ottawa, our next target.
Again, I had a special moment when going by train. Seems like in Canada its necessary to have a person in every train wagon who is responsible for evacuation of the train when having an emergency situation.
This time I was nominated. I was so proud ;)

Again Alena was organizing our accommodation.
This time we had 2 different flats.
Christina and Tomi went by Uber to Old Chelsea. (A small village close to Ottawa)

Me and Alena took the bus. When entering the bus we should pay 6$ (No change) We only had 20$ nodes. The bus driver was cool. "Just enter you have to transfer anyway so you can pay at the next bus" I asked 2 young guys in the bus if they can change money. They couldn't, but they just gave me enough coins without wanting anything in return. Canadians are just great!!! One even told me: That's the situations why I have this small money with me. Definitely worth a Manner for both of them.

We went to a nice part of Ottawa that only consists of family houses.

Our AirBNB host was named "Gordon" and he welcomed us very friendly.
He directly invited us to drink beer together with him and that it is the first time that he is hosting somebody through AirBNB.
So we got a totally new room that he just built up in the last few month.
Just the shower was not finished yet.

He also told us that we are his test persons.
Afterwards he wants to decide if he will continue doing AirBNB or only rent it for a longer time.
Somehow he wanted to try it, so that he can meet lots of interesting persons.

Gordon was ab interesting guy. He told us stories, but he also was very curious about our point of view.
We even talked about politics and social systems in Europa and America. We considered him to be a smart guy and later found out that he is a highschool teacher.

We were not the only ones living with Gordon.
Upstairs his daughter and Gabi (A girl from Uganda who was studying in Ottawa) had their rooms.

After drinking 2 beers with Gordon and talking a lot, Gabi returned home.
And she was not alone. A tall young guy that seemed to be a bit shy accompanied her.
She introduced him to Gordon and that was the start of a long a intense discussion.
We only got half of it, but it seemed that Gabi was quite into this boy and Gordon promised to her father that she would return in one piece...

Meanwhile Gabi's friend was sitting with us in the living room.
He is from Quebec state, so his mother language is French.
He also has native American ancestors and that's very important for him.
As the next day was 150 years celebration of Canada, we asked him how he would spent the day.
He said that he will definitely not celebrate at all.
The history is full of brutality against native Americans, so its not a day to celebrate.

Gordon and Gabi meanwhile ended their fight, ending in Gabi going upstairs and her friend leaving the house.
A bit later Gabi left the house too, so I don't know who won the fight.
Gordon just told us at another beer "Oh man, girls..."

Even if it was a strange situation, the whole evening was just so real.
It was not like being in a hotel to be among tourists.
We were in a real family with all the emotions and problems they have, talking to them about their lives and their point of view on living.
It's not that I have to agree to everything, I just like to find out how other people see the world.
Unlike Alena, I loved that evening a lot.

Sort:

that was a cool travel blog. Gordon seems like a very nice family man

Yes he is.
Our journey was half a year ago and just yesterday I wrote mails with him, so we still are in contact.
