After seeing the entire east coast and a small part of the west coast of australia, we moved on to new zealand. We were especially looking forward to australia's little neighbors and the things and people who distinguish New Zealand from Australia. Hokitika Gorge was one of New Zealand's most beautiful places we saw. It's been a while since we visited this place, but it seems like it was yesterday. From afar we have seen the incredible turquoise water. You could not see through it like in Australia, it was just deep turquoise, but not clear. So we made our way to Hokitika Gorge. The Hokitika Gorge Walk is about 30 minutes away from Hokitika. The drive there is well signposted. When we arrived in New Zealand, we directly borrowed a small rental car. We found out later that it was a very good decision. In New Zealand it is almost impossible to visit the island without your own car. We drove to Hokitika Gorge by car, it was about one hour from our accommodation. A kind of parking lot was in front of the Hokitika Gorge walk. It takes about twenty minutes to arrive at the famous suspension bridge. Already on the way there are one or the other opportunity to shoot nice photos, because you can also look at the suspension bridge. So that you have an idea of the view, I have provided you below a picture of such a viewing platform.

The Walk to Hokitika Gorge leads through a forest, along the gorge and over the famous bridge. Only three people are allowed on the bridge (I think it was three). Honestly, I was also very happy about it, the bridge did not look like it could stand a lot of weight and it did not look like it when I stood on it. To be honest it was even very shaky and I was glad when I had solid ground under my feet again. Of course, one or two pictures could not be missing. On the way to Gorge there were lots of tourists. But that was perhaps also because we had great weather. We did some really nice photos on the beautiful white stones. There were especially many backpackers who jumped from the cliffs and rocks into the water. We were very envious of them, especially because it was very hot that day and the water offered a good cooling. But we did not go swimming there anyway. That was once because otherwise we would have had to cream us with sunscreen. And then it went back home for a whole hour by car. Do you know the unpleasant feeling of sticky sunscreen on the skin? And the other reason was that there was a lot of sandflies there.
Sandflies are very nasty mosquitoes that sting directly and leave unpleasant thick mosquito bites. To be honest we had a very big problem with mosquitoes in New Zealand. After we came from Australia, we had not thought of mosquitoes. But they are everywhere in New Zealand. Depending on where you are, the stitches are extremely painful and you notice directly when a mosquito stings you. It can also be very usual that it is bleeding at this point. So when you want to swim there, I recommend with the best of conscience to take enough mosquito spray with you;) Even without swimming there, the view was beautiful and definitely one of the most beautiful landscapes that we were allowed to admire in New Zealand.

Hi @katrin-lux, I'm really interesting to see your various adventure parts. I heard and watch many time from videos about New Zealand. It's really beautiful country in the world. Your photography saying big story than your words. Especially water color very attractive to my eyes.

Just came back from NZ myself. Really nice. We only went the South island - Far less people which suits me fine. Found some spectacular places, as you obviously have also.
Yeah its really nice there. And i think the south Island has also more beautiful Sides than the north ;) we spent there more time too
