Tree Tuesday: giving trees a haircut, ตัดแต่งกิ่งไม้

Finally we could give those trees a proper trimming of overgrown branches this week. The usual group of workers who used to do this job have been very busy during the past several months. So, the appointment has been postponed three times. But this time they had to come as two branches were sitting on the electricity cable. The risky situation persuaded the head of the workers to let three of them come to save the situation. With stormy rain and windy condition this month, we really had to do something about this problem.

I was so glad that two friendly faces turned up with a nice young chap in the afternoon. They saw our problem with that unruly tree. It was partly my fault to have it planted there. I had no idea that the branches of this tree had a very different structure from our Burmese ebony trees. These branches just sprayed out in all directions. So, after all those branches were trimmed, I decided to have it cut down really short. My old friend gave this tree as a small sapling several years ago.

Then, we went after all those branches which were getting to close to the electricity cable. All the three ladders were stationed for action. The youngest worker was very good at climbing trees. My neck suffered from looking up at those branches which ought to be cut. Luckily it did not rain and the cloudy sky kept the heat at bay.

The only obstacle was the red ants which tended to hide their big nests among the Burmese ebony branches. We all got bitten by these fierce ants. One worker was attacked by more than ten army ants at the same time. I got almost five ants inside my trousers. We all jumped and yelled at those ants spasmodically. But I was very happy with the team work. Three hours’ work seemed like a whole day work. We got through half the trees and all the difficult branches were dealt with peacefully.

I had to pray to and ask permission from the land-spirits and tree-spirits before we started cutting branches. The biggest tree where those spirits were residing was worked on nicely and smoothly. It’s very fortunate that they allowed us to do our work under their protection. There were lots of stories about people who ignored tree-spirits and subsequently got injury, became ill or suffered from spirit hallucinations.
I had known a whole family suffering badly as a result of letting people cutting a big tree in front of their house without asking for permission. My friend who was a Feng Shui master asked me to help with this case. It was quite a learning experience and an incredible direct contact with tree-spirit. I was not told about any fact or situation. But I could describe everything according to the tree-spirit communication. The owner of the house broke into tears after hearing my report. So, I have become a believer of tree-spirits from that day. I did wonder what happened to that family after they moved back to Singapore years ago.

ในที่สุดเราก็ได้ฤกษ์ทำการตัดกิ่งไม้ในสวนหลังบ้าน เราคอยให้คนงานมาช่วยตัดหลายครั้ง แต่ก็มีการเลื่อนนัดถึงสามสี่ครั้ง เพราะหัวหน้าได้งานสร้างบ้านติดต่อกันสี่หลังในปีที่ผ่านมา เราก็คอยเก้อหลายครั้ง แต่ครั้งนี้เราบอกว่าเลื่อนไม่ได้แล้ว ให้ส่งคนมาช่วยตัดกิ่งไม้สองกิ่งใหญ่ที่พาดอยู่บนสายไฟฟ้าก่อน นี่เป็นต้นมะค่าที่เพื่อนเก่าให้มาหลายปีแล้ว ตอนนั้นมันต้นเล็กมากจนเราคิดว่าจะไม่รอด ก็เลยปลูกไว้ข้างบ้าน เราไม่คิดว่ากิ่งของมันจะกระจายไปทุกทิศทุกทาง ไม่เหมือนกับต้นประดู่ที่กิ่งไม้จะมีรูปแบบที่เหมือนพัด ทำให้ดูแลแต่งกิ่งง่ายกว่ามาก เราก็ให้ตัดกิ่งข้างๆออกให้หมด แล้วตัดลำต้นให้เตี้ยลงมาเหลือหนึ่งเมตร เราจะรอดูว่าจะทรงพุ่มจะเป็นอย่างไรต่อไป

คนที่มาช่วยกันตัดต้นไม้เป็นคนที่เคยมาทำงานนี้ประจำสองคน ส่วนเด็กหนุ่มที่มาใหม่เป็นนักปีนต้นไม้ที่เก่งมาก เราได้ไหว้เจ้าที่เจ้าทางและเทวดาประจำต้นไม้แล้ว ว่ามีความจำเป็นต้องขออนุญาตตัดกิ่งไม้ที่เข้าใกล้สายไฟ และกิ่งไม้ที่ห้อยลงมาตามทางเดิน เพื่อความปลอดภัย แลให้มีแสงแดดเข้ามาถึงต้นไม้ข้างล่างด้วย เราต้องคอยสั่งการเรื่องการตัดกิ่งไม้จนเมื่อยต้นคอมาก และทุกคนโดนมดแดงกัดจนเจ็บไปหมด มดแดงไปทำรังซ่อนตามกิ่งไม้สูง พอไปตัดโดนกิ่งไม้ พวกมดแดงออกมาอาละวาดกัดทุกคน เราก็โดนไปหลายแผล ก็ต้องเก็บรังมดแดงใส่ถุงขยะไปปล่อยที่ป่าละเมาะไกลๆในภายหลัง เราดีใจมากที่ทุกคนทำงานกันเป็นทีม ทำงานกันสามชั่วโมงเหมือนทำงานกันทั้งวัน ได้ผลงานที่ดีมาก เหลือต้นไม้อีกแปดต้นที่ต้องตัดแต่งกิ่งไม้ เราก็หวังว่าคงได้ช่วยกันทำงานในเดือนหน้า งานใหญ่ที่ยากและลำบากก็ผ่านพ้นไปแล้ว ที่เหลือเป็นการแต่งรูปแบบต้นไม้ที่ง่ายกว่ามาก ช่วงนี้มีพายุฝนและลมแรงมาก พอตัดแต่งกิ่งไม้ออกจากบริเวณสายไฟแล้ว ก็ทำให้เราสบายใจมากขึ้น เราก็รู้สึกขอบคุณเจ้าที่ และเทวดาต่างๆที่อยูในต้นไม้ที่ให้ความเข้าใจและการดูแลความปลอดภัยของพวกเราทุกคน
