The Shadow Cast by Spirit Airlines

in #usalast month

Spirit Airlines tended to divide people - being a budget airline some loved it for its cheap prices, others loathed it because of its lack of frills and low quality service.

But whatever you think about it, the collapse of this budget airline might just be an indicator of the new era Trump's policies are creating....

This collapse is possibly about more than just poor management or bad luck..... this could be the first big American business to fall because of trouble involving Iran.

Airlines, more than any other business, live or die based on the cost of fuel.

And when you have a war with a major oil provider which then makes it difficult for other oil providers to ship fuel, the price of fuel goes up, and that's very harmful to a business such as Spirit, which works on very slim margins.

Of corse Republicans blame the fact that regulators blocked a merger with JetBlue. Everyone picked a side.

When Everything Gets Political

It’s striking how quickly this business story turned political. Not so long ago, an airline going broke would’ve gotten a business-school autopsy: poor choices, too much debt, maybe changing tastes.

Today, nearly every big economic event gets sucked into the political fight.

  • Fuel prices? That’s a foreign policy problem now.
  • An airline failing? Blame the regulators.

Every big loss becomes ammunition for one side or the other.

Spirit’s bankruptcy is one more dividing line in a country that’s already been split in so many ways.

The Real Cost of Cheap Flights

There’s another side to this. For three decades, budget airlines changed the game. Suddenly, millions who couldn’t afford vacations before were flying all over the country on the cheap. But that model only works when things go right: cheap fuel, steady supply chains, strong demand, and money that isn’t too expensive to borrow.

Once those building blocks start to wobble, businesses like Spirit discover just how unforgiving their world can be.

And this is true far beyond airlines. So much of the economy was built on the idea that the world would stay calm, and now, that old certainty looks like a bad bet.

Looking Ahead

At the end of the day Spirit’s meltdown isn’t only about a low-cost airline hitting a wall. It’s about the larger shift happening everywhere. Tensions abroad. Wild fuel prices. Unreliable supply chains. More government intervention. The stable years that allowed budget models to thrive are fading, fast.

Sort:

Yes this was about fuel prices. Two weeks before the repossessions took place they were struggling to pay the fuel bill and with margins so tight they must have been losing millions in the final days. They had to fly at a loss due to having sold those cheap tickets which was then below cost. Budget models only work in a stable environment.

I mean it makes sense that flying is something of a luxury anyway!
