Harvest from the center of Athens

in #walk • 2 years ago

Objective as always (how modest does that sound? 😄) I'm not here to give you a false idea about Athens. I mean, I even had the nerve to show you a burnt down car while the subject was Athens's riviera stunning beauty in my previous post.

So yes, Athens is definitely not the most cycle/walk friendly city on earth as its far from flat and the drivers look civilised only if you compare them to the ones in Constantinople but at the same time it definitely have its parks and historic places where you can enjoy a quiet (and cooler in summer) environment during your stay. Among the best ones is the National Garden. Unfortunately it's undergoing some maintenance at the moment and many areas are not accessible so here's my restricted harvest from its lake and the local water turtles:

Once a royal garden as the palace of the day was right next to it, now the palace is our Parliament for the last 90 years and the garden is open to the public. Times change...

The sun feels like laser as the clear blue sky with full clarity due to the dry North wind puts no rocks on the way of the sun's rays so I try to stay in the shade while I picture bits of the Zappio area:

Isn't it impressive how the super bright sun compliments the pictures? No edits applied.

Even more impressive though is how Nature pops out of the most unexpected places to remind us that there's no word like "gap" in Nature's book:

I mean, think about it for a little while, the air accidentally brought a seed or two in this tiny gap and still this thing managed to grow unattended in between two pieces of marble, only to make the whole scene so much better.

But humans do nice stuff too. At least when they don't kill each other. One of them is the metro station at Syntagma:

No, don't mistake this as a museum, it's Syntagma metro station and it's full of exhibited items that were found during the excavations:

Actually yes, you may consider it as a free museum:

I've seen much more tasteless museums than this and they were not for free:

Especially this idea to represent the profile of an ancient road is such a great idea:

One can even see the profile of an ancient grave:

Even one with the skeleton in!

How could this guy above imagine back in the day he was alive that 2500 years later millions of people annually would see his skeleton annually!

It's not all about antiquities though, there's bits of modern art too like this one:

Thanks for walking with me, see you one the next one - not sure if we'll ride or walk yet 🙂
