Finding Ideas to Write About in Your Email

As a writer I’m often looking around for inspiration. Some days it’s harder than others to grab the idea to propel words onto my screen. The fuel to send my fingers dancing across the keyboard.

It only takes a spark to light the match. Some days the spark is harder to find than others.

Late last year I started building lists for days when I wanted to write something and didn’t have my own inspiration. I decided to share what I had compiled with others. Prompt A Day was born.

I send prompts out by email every day at 5am EST.

What Type of Prompts Am I Sending?

There are six prompts for writing and one for reading. Yes, one for reading. Writers are also readers, it’s what fuels us.

Here’s what to expect.

Word Prompt — usually a single word. It could be a simple word intended to spark an idea or two. It could also be a word not commonly used. I like expanding my vocabulary even if I don’t often use the word again. In exploring what an uncommon word is, I’m often inspired to write about something uncommon.

**Journal/Blogging Prompt **— This is usually a question of some type. It might be an invite to share something about yourself or your life. It might also be an invite to share your thoughts on a topic.

Fiction Prompt — Meant to inspire fiction writing of all lengths from micro to short stories. I’d be surprised if one of the fiction prompts inspired a book but who knows. Your imagination could take you any where.

**Current Gratitude Prompt **— In a world where the negative seems to overpower us at times, it’s good to pause and think about what makes us grateful. Who or what in our lives inspire us to see the good, to be good, to be not alone. This prompt changes weekly instead of daily. It gives you time to ponder and consider what you want to write about in response to it.

Current Reading Challenge — Writers read. At least any writers I know also read. I found in my younger days I always learned, nay, absorbed more about writing style through reading than anything a teacher could teach me. I could never pass a grammar test yet I could write without a lot of grammar errors. I attribute that to the amount of reading I did. This prompt changes every two weeks to give you time to read the suggested book.

Quote — Quotes often inspire me in many ways. They can spark my ideas on a subject or elicit disagreement. Either way, I’ve often found an interesting quote can send my inspiration off into different directions. It’s kind of like the author opening a conversation that I need to pick up and flow with.

Idiom of the Day — We all use idioms, those words and phrases often taking on meaning through usage or locale. If I asked you for a loonie, you’d probably think I was a bit loony unless you were a Canadian. Then you’d know I just asked you for a dollar. The Idiom of the Day will bring you idioms I’ve collected from all over the world and some which are common to many cultures. Have some fun.

How To Use the Prompts

Really, the short answer is — any way you want.

The prompts are not meant to tie you into anything. If the journal prompt for the day inspires you to write a story or poem, do it. Have some fun with them.

They can nudge you out of your comfort zone. They can inspire you to share your creativity in ways you’re not used to. You might even have fun doing so.

The prompts are not on a time frame. They are there for your inspiration. Inspiration might come today, tomorrow or next week, who cares.

How Do I Get the Prompts?
Just sign up for the Prompt A Day email list. I wont be spamming you with offers. I may sometimes send out a note or two with some helpful information like writing tips.

Of course, if for some reason you decide you don’t want the prompts, you can unsubscribe. It’s that easy.

Why Don’t You Just Publish the Prompts Every Day?

I write on multiple platforms and the prompts are not just for those platforms. They are meant for any creative who would like to get some ideas each day.

Personally, I like the structure of them showing up in my inbox for me to have a look and see what inspires me.
