Southern Africa in trouble!

in #zimbabwe6 years ago (edited)

Waking up this morning and going through the news as I always do, I was met with a surprising bit of news that I have been following recently. Zimbabwe is currently in the throws of a Military takeover led by Maj Gen Sibusiso Moyo and his followers. This comes as quite a surprise as Robert Mugabe still has strong support in Zimbabwe.

Military Coup

The news coming from Zimbabwe is adamant that they are not experiencing a coup, but a 'peaceful transition'. As odd as it sounds, so far it seems that it was relatively peaceful. These reports may not be accurate as the military has occupied the public broadcasting network so the news should be taken lightly.

Yesterday, 14 November, saw armoured military vehicles moving into Harare following an unprecedented move by the military. The primary motivation claimed by them was to stop the purging of supporters for ousted deputy president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Where is uncle Bob?

Robert Mugabe is currently being held under house arrest after the military barricaded the famous 'Blue House'. Mugabe was not present at the time of the takeover but was later taken into custody. His wife, Grace Mugabe, who is the favourite to continue the Mugabe Legacy, has reportedly fled to Namibia in the chaos.

International response

Calls for peace have been flooding in from around the world as the events unfold but South-Africa has probably been put in the most precarious position. According to African Union laws, no military takeover can be recognised, even with popular support. As the current leader of SADC, South Africa will be looked at to intervene should things get out of hand. This is not a good position to be in as South-Africa is also struggling under political infighting as the ANC electoral conference prepares to meet in December.

My opinion?

Robert Mugabe is a parasite that should have been dealt with long ago. Although I am not a fan of military intervention or violence in general, I do believe this is a good step for Zimbabwe to take if it frees them from an oppressive leader that has led the country to ruin!

The people, united, will never be defeated.

It's time. Africa Unite!

I feel like this could go very wrong, and I feel like SA will not make the correct decisions. I am nervous about this entire situation

Living in South-Africa, I cannot help but worry. I do see this as a positive though as turmoil often sparks a period of cooperation and revival. Zuma will try to intervene as Mugabe is a personal ally. South-Africa's military is too weak to be able to effectively do anything...

If I was president, I would use this opportunity to take control of Zimbabwe. Not a full annexation but at the very least a puppet government that could help restore the country...

I hope it all turns out good, it can hardly go worse than what it currently is in Zimbabwe.

I have a feeling that this might be a new beginning for Zimbabwe but that will depend on who takes over. A military leadership will only serve to throw the whole region off balance...

It's funny but it seems that having these Lady Macbeth type of wives who control their husbands and motivate them to do all these evil and unacceptable things to cling to power happens a lot.

I think Mugabe wasn't half the tyrant that his wife was.

The same happened with Tzar Nicholas II of Russia. He left his wife in power, and his wife was having an affair with some weird Siberian long bearded hairy healing-monk-man... Obviously the Russian revolution wasn't far behind...

I mean it's just Pure Macbeth. Shakespear nailed it with the way these guys get played out by their wives...

Glad Mugabe will be stepping down. It's been a long time coming!

Hope Zimbabwe can recover from the years of insanity...

However, a disclaimer, if there is anything to be said about history repeating itself, he will step down.
The army will set up a provisional government.
They will try to hold election.
And a rising power that's been repressed for all this time in Zimbabwe will sweep through the country by force, over-turn the army, and declare a new kind of dictatorship, with the promise of helping Zimbabwe...

Sad, but you heard it here first I guess...

Thank you for the comments. I do not know whether Grace Mugabe was always as tyrannical as she has recently shown herself to be. Robert Mugabe, in my opinion, is a lot more dictatorial than she was, however, with the desperation of a successor I think she realised that she has an opportunity to gain power...

I am quite confident that this will not devolve into a military occupation as Emmerson Mnangagwa has reportedly returned to the country to take over. What does worry me is that Emmerson Mnangagwa is not exactly a good person...

Behind every great man is a great women...
So it is equally true that behind terrible tyrant, is an even scarier woman!

I know nothing of Emmerson Mnangagwa, but as you described it, he sounds like exactly like the kind of person that will sell out to international finance...

They will come, invest many dollars in Zimbabwe, fix the economy, profit immensely from a economically-devastated country, and then once they build it up, will leave and crash it again...

Just churning the wealth out of a country like a farmer milking a cow...

Sorry if this opinion sucks, but what hope does Zimbabwe really have?

It's always sad to see someone who initially had good ideas fail, and fail because he surrounds himself with the wrong people and ends up giving way to their corruption...

Mugabe would not have held on to power so long without feeding the piranhas...
Now that he is gone, the piranhas will do as they please

Pray for Zimbabwe :(

nice post

Scary stuff indeed!

It is quite terrifying but with a positive opportunity on the horizon. We will have to see...
