Getting good grades is not everything

12th May is the result date of all SSC candidates in my country Bangladesh, it’s a board exam which you have to pass to get into another class. I didn’t think of the results day that much as it’s not the same date every year because it changes with the time when the exam was held. I also don’t read news or keep any updates about it but on 11th May a guy who is like my own brother his name is Bamun he texted me saying that he was feeling very nervous.

At first I was very confused because I didn’t know what was going on in his mind. He kept talk about how his life is gonna end if he doesn’t success. Then I asked him what he was talking about so, he told me that he is worried about his results. I was relieved that it was nothing serious but the way he was talking I felt that something is off. Suddenly he called me and started to cry because he is scared. I asked him what he was scared of? He said his mom would be very angry if he doesn’t get GPA 5.

He also added that she would kick him out of the house if he does not score the point his mom wants to see otherwise she would be very embarrassed about his result. This thing got me reminded about my mom once she used to be very rough with me for studies. I still remember how she used to taunt me for it. But then I also remember how time passed and everything around me changed. I got achievements in life and it is not only from studies but also from somewhere I would never expect.

Bamun could not stop crying I also did not know what I was supposed to say as I have been through this situation. Then I asked him to calm down and told him that if he does not get the score everyone is expecting from him nothing will end. Everything will be the same as it was before. Yeah, for few days his mom might taunt him but later on she will also forget. I think it’s normal for him to be sad about it. Then he said his mom won’t accept and he will jump off the building if the situation doesn’t go well.

I got very upset when I heard him saying those words. I could feel his pain that how much it means to him to get the perfect score. But he also has to learn to accept his fate. If he doesn’t succeed it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. For sure no student leaves behind the mark on purpose if he knows the answer of the question. I think parents should also try to understand. Even though the parents didn’t do well when they used to study but they still have high bound expectations from their children.

I think parents should watch the efforts not the mark. I have seen many people being unemployed even though they have GPA 5 in their results but still they could not find a stable job. Most parents think that without a great score their children can’t achieve anything in life but that’s not all true. Yeah it is beneficial if you have good marks but it does not mean that one with less marks is not capable of doing anything. I think if you have knowledge of the work you want to do then you can do anything in life.

I also think that pressurising the kids will effect their mindset and might cause them to lose their normal behaviour. I have seen many people forgot how to interact they only know how to study like a robot, but that’s not how life should be because life is easy and there’s no need to make it difficult. Bamun didn’t even have the permission to go outside with friends or anywhere. He was not allowed to do anything as he was a theif in a cage. He was only told to study all day long and he also did but on the result day which is 12th May he still could not get the marks his mom expected in the finals. He got 4.94 and it is pretty much close to 5.00, but his mom is still not satisfied.

He told me that his mom started behaving more roughly with him and didn’t talk with him that much. His relatives also called his mom to ask about his results and they also have given negative comments which made his mom more angry. Bamun was feeling embarrassed he said that on Mother’s Day he could not make his mom happy at all. Then I tried to make him feel a bit better so that he won’t end up doing anything wrong. Then he told me that he is very thankful for my support. I was very happy that I could make his pain go away for a little bit.

At last I would say parents should stop pressurising their child and take care of their mental health also, support them in whatever they want to do in life. Because it cause the end of the world.

I won't say that school is not important in today's world, but school no longer gives us room to make money, I'm a graduate and I don't have a job that can make me $300/month, it really sucks

Yeah, studying is important but they don't provide the basic knowledge for our livelihood.

Bamun's story is kind of touching. Getting good grades is the pride of every parent but it's high time they stopped putting pressure on their children instead, they should help them succeed. This is why some children change their grades before reaching home which is wrong of them

Yeah, parents pressurises too much which makes the children lie.
