Hello hive friends! here I am back for a new post.
These days I have been in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, or perhaps the most beautiful, majestic, ancient and rich in history, a city that makes you dream, fall in love and always discover new things; a city that was once almost the capital of the world and that today is the capital of my beloved country, Italy. This city is ROME!
Every time I come back to visit Rome, I always discover new things and marvel at the beauty of its monuments.
Ciao amici di hive! eccomi tornata per un nuovo post.
In questi giorni sono stata in una delle città più belle d’Italia, o forse la più bella, maestosa, antica e ricca di storia, una città che fa sognare, fa innamorare e scoprire sempre cose nuove; una città che una volta era quasi capitale del mondo e che oggi è capitale del mio amato paese, l’Italia. Questa città è ROMA!
Tutte le volte che torno a visitare Roma, scopro sempre cose nuove e mi meraviglio per la bellezza dei suoi monumenti.
I was in Rome for a short time, and my trip this time was not really for cultural purposes, but almost for fun, I and a dear friend of mine booked the concert of our favorite singer, Marco Mengoni, at the Circus Maximus in Rome. The concert was amazing, thinking for me to find myself listening to my favorite singer in the frame of the ancient Roman circus was almost a dream. The circus is immense, 600 meters long and 140 meters wide, was used for racing with carts and for other Roman games today instead, given its size and its ability to contain many people, is used for large shows, such as concerts.
But this is not what I want to talk about today, although I was only one night in Rome, I still managed to carve out time to visit a place that I really want to talk to you about, because it is a place that you visit little, but really worth visiting if you are in Rome.
It is located very close to the Colosseum so there is no excuse, if you are in Rome you must definitely book a visit to the Domus Aurea.
Sono stata a Roma per poco tempo, e il mio viaggio questa volta non era proprio per scopo culturale, ma quasi per divertimento, io e una mia cara amica abbiamo prenotato il concerto del nostro cantante preferito, Marco Mengoni, al Circo Massimo di Roma. Il concerto è stato strepitoso, pensare per me di ritrovarmi ad ascoltare il mio cantante preferito nella cornice dell’antico circo romano è stato quasi un sogno. Il circo è immenso, lungo 600 mt e largo 140, veniva utilizzato per le corse con i carri e per altri giochi romani oggi invece, vista la sua grandezza e la sua capacità di contenere tante persone, viene utilizzato per grandi spettacoli, come concerti.
Ma non è di questo che voglio parlarvi oggi, nonostante io sia stata solo una notte a Roma, sono riuscita comunque a ritagliare del tempo per visitare un luogo del quale ci tengo moltissimo a parlarvi, perchè è un luogo che si visita poco, ma che vale veramente la pena di visitare se vi trovate a Roma.
Si trova vicinissimo al Colosseo perciò non esistono scuse, se siete a Roma dovete assolutamente prenotare la visita alla Domus Aurea.
The Domus Aurea
First of all I start by explaining to you, for those who do not know, what is the Domus Aurea; Domus in Latin means House and Gold obviously means gold, golden, so we talk about a golden house and consequently the house of an emperor, Nero.
The Domus Aurea was built by the emperor Nero after the fire that struck Rome in 64 A.D. and it took four years to build the immense Domus, which occupied 80 hectares on three of the seven hills of Rome, the hill Oppio, Palatino and Celio. You must imagine it as a majestic building all covered with polychrome marble and gold.Today the only part that can be visited is the one on the Oppian hill, since after the damnatio memoriae of Nero was ordered the destruction of all his works, and also of the Domus Aurea, the part that I will now show you was all buried, during the Flavian era, and this operation has allowed its preservation.
La Domus Aurea
Innanzitutto parto col spiegarvi, per chi non lo sapesse, che cos’è la Domus Aurea; Domus in latino significa Casa e aurea ovviamente significa d’oro, dorata, quindi parliamo di una casa dorata e di conseguenza la casa di un imperatore, Nerone.
La Domus Aurea fu costruita dall’imperatore Nerone dopo l’incendio che colpì Roma nel 64 d.C. e ci vollero ben quattro anni per costruire l’immensa Domus il quale spazio occupava ben 80 ettari su tre dei sette colli di Roma, il colle Oppio, Palatino e Celio. Dovete immaginarla come un maestoso edificio tutto ricoperto da marmi policromi e oro. Oggi l’unica parte visitabile è quella sul colle Oppio, poichè dopo la damnatio memoriae di Nerone venne ordinata la distruzione di tutte le sue opere, e anche della Domus Aurea, la parte che ora vi mostrerò è stata tutta interrata, durante l’epoca dei flavi, e questa operazione ne ha consentita la conservazione.
The exhibition I visited inside the Domus Aurea is called "The beloved of Isis: Nero, the Domus Aurea and Egypt" because during the restoration operation that happens continuously ( the visit to this place is exceptional because it allows you to see the archaeological site and its continuous evolution ), allowed you to discover the Egyptian motifs and then to design this exhibition, as also from historical sources is documented the proximity of Nero to Egypt despite never actually visited it.
Once we entered through a modern walkway we went down to the level to reach the walkway of the domus that is, having immediately questioned, at a lower level. It is recommended the use of windbreakers because inside the Domus there are about 10 of them.
La mostra che ho visitato all’interno della Domus Aurea si chiama “L’amato di Iside: Nerone, la domus aurea e l’Egitto” questo perchè durante l’operazione di restauro che avviene continuamente ( la visita a questo luogo è eccezionale perché permette di vedere il cantiere archeologico e la sua continua evoluzione ), ha permesso di scoprire dei motivi egittizzanti e quindi di ideare questa mostra, poichè anche dalle fonti storiche è documentata la vicinanza di Nerone con l’Egitto nonostante non lo abbia mai effettivamente visitato.
Una volta entrati tramite una passerella moderna siamo scesi di livello per raggiungere in piano di camminamento della domus che si trova, avendo subito l’interro, a un livello più basso. E’ consigliato l’uso di giacche a vento poichè all’interno della Domus ci sono circa 10°.
Once we went down we reached the "Sala Ottagona" , a magnificent example of architecture surmounted by a dome and pavilion, which had a large circular hole in the center from which passed the light ( like the Pantheon ) and around niches and a staircase with a natural waterfall. The exhibition recreated the environment using projections to recreate water.
According to sources, the room was used for banquets, it was certainly very decorated, to show people the magnificence of the Domus. Here the exhibition was centered, there were the presence of a series of Egyptian statues and not that were well understood the proximity and the connection that there was between the emperor and Egypt, so that there was a statue of Nero with a head hat similar to that used by the pharaohs.
Una volta scesi abbiamo raggiunta la “ Sala Ottagona" , un magnifico esempio di architettura sormontata da una cupola e padiglione, che aveva un grande foro circolare al centro da cui passava la luce ( come il Pantheon ) e attorno delle nicchie e una scalinata con cascata naturale. La mostra ha ricreato l’ambiente utilizzando delle proiezioni per ricreare l’acqua.
Secondo le fonti la sala serviva per i banchetti, sicuramente era molto decorata, per mostrare alle persone la magnificenza della Domus. Qui si è incentrata la mostra, vi erano la presenza di una serie di statue egizie e non che facevano ben comprendere la vicinanza e il nesso che c’era tra l’imperatore e l’Egitto, tanto che vi era una statua di Nerone con in testa un copricapo simile a quello usato dai faraoni.
Another room that has preserved almost entirely a ceiling decorated with frescoes and inserts of precious stones and gold that were removed at the time of discovery.
You can see some human figures on the vault, surrounded by Greek in geometric style, and the remains of a shell-shaped niche remain.
Another smaller room adjacent to the latter still has a fresco reminiscent of those found at Villa Poppea in Pompeii and a black and white floor always in geometric style that has been preserved most likely because it was of " little value" compared to the other floors that were torn in the Flavian era and reused for other buildings.
Unicum in its kind for the Domus Aurea, a ceiling with wooden elements perhaps bamboo rods that were used for the construction of the buildings, there are many in Pompeii because they are preserved while here is unique.
Un’altra stanza la quale ha conservato quasi interamente un soffitto decorato ad affresco e con inserti di pietre preziose e oro che sono stati rimossi nel momento del ritrovamento.
Si possono vedere alcune figure umane sulla volta, circondate da greche in stile geometrico, e rimangono i resti di una nicchia a forma di conchiglia.
Altro ambiente più piccolo adiacente a quest’ultimo presenta ancora un affresco che ricorda quelli rinvenuti a villa Poppea a Pompei e un pavimento bianco e nero sempre in stile geometrico che si è conservato molto probabilmente perchè era di “ poco valore” rispetto agli altri pavimenti che sono stati strappati in epoca flavia e riutilizzati per altri edifici.
Unicum nel suo genere per la domus aurea, un soffitto con elementi lignei forse canne di bambu che servivano per la costruzione degli edifici, se ne trovano molti a Pompei perché si sono conservati mentre qui è unico nel suo genere.
The cleaning of the frescoes in a very large room has allowed the birth of this exhibition that sees protagonist Nero and Egypt, in fact we saw a two-sided form of frescoes that are then repeated on the walls, with typical elements of Egyptian culture and the presence of the image of Isis. This allowed the realization of the exhibition.
A very interesting part was the room where it was possible to see via VR headset then with a virtual experience of about 5 minutes, as were the environments of the Domus at the time of Nero. This part is one of the most interesting because it allows even the less experienced to understand and understand how it was built and the various environments of the Domus Aurea.

La pulitura degli affreschi in una stanza molto ampia ha consentito la nascita di questa mostra che vede protagonista Nerone e l’Egitto, infatti si è visto un modulo a due di affreschi che poi vengono ripetuti sulle pareti, con elementi tipici della cultura egizia e la presenza dell’immagine di Iside. Questo ha permesso la realizzazione della mostra.
Una parte molto interessante è stata la sala dove era possibile vedere tramite visore VR quindi con un’esperienza virtuale di circa 5 minuti, come erano gli ambienti della Domus al tempo di Nerone. Questa parte è una delle più interessanti perchè permette anche ai meno esperti di capire e comprendere come era costruita e i vari ambienti della Domus Aurea.
