I’m back with another samurai-themed Asian production, but this time combined with some supernatural, mystery and horror. Although a few weeks ago I reviewed an Asian horror movie that I did not like, this one caught my attention because those who know me know that I lean towards mystery when I decide to watch a movie, but this time I stopped a little because it was also horror and that is not my genre, plus as I had already seen that movie in which the scenes nor the performances had not seemed credible to me, so I hesitated a little to start watching this one, but in the end I gave in to the curiosity to know what the mystery was.
Vuelvo con otra producción asiática de temática samurái, pero esta vez combinada con algo de sobrenatural, misterio y terror. Aunque hace unas semanas reseñé una película asiática de terror que no me gustó, esta me llamó la atención porque los que me conocen saben que me inclino por el misterio cuando decido ver una película, pero esta vez me detuve un poco porque también era de terror y ese no es mi género, además como ya había visto esa película en la que las escenas ni las actuaciones no me habían parecido creíbles, así que dudé un poco en empezar a ver esta, pero al final cedí a la curiosidad de saber cuál era el misterio.
It all begins on a plane in which a shaman and her companion Bong-gil are traveling, they are going to the United States because a wealthy family (Park) of Korean origin has contacted them to examine their newborn son who is in the hospital sick of something they do not know, the baby does not stop crying and only calms down and sleeps when they sedate him.
When they are left alone in the room with the baby and perform a ritual, they realice that the family is being cursed by one of their ancestors who could be a grandfather. This sets off alarm bells in the family because they have a buried grandfather that no one wants to talk about. Lee Hwa-rim (Shaman) proposes to the family to look for the grave and exhume the corpse to help them find the way to heaven (I guess), for this he seeks the services of Kim Sang-deok, a geomancer, Feng Shui expert and gravedigger and his assistant Young-geun who is a funeral worker.
Todo comienza en un avión en el que viajan una chamana y su compañero Bong-gil, van a Estados Unidos porque una familia adinerada (Park) de origen coreano se ha puesto en contacto con ellos para examinar a su hijo recién nacido que está en el hospital enfermo de algo que desconocen, el bebé no para de llorar y sólo se calma y duerme cuando lo sedan.
Cuando se quedan solos en la habitación con el bebé y realizan un ritual, se dan cuenta de que la familia está siendo maldecida por uno de sus antepasados que podría ser un abuelo. Esto hace saltar las alarmas en la familia porque tienen un abuelo enterrado del que nadie quiere hablar. Lee Hwa-rim (Chamán) propone a la familia buscar la tumba y exhumar el cadáver para ayudarle a encontrar el camino al cielo (supongo), para ello busca los servicios de Kim Sang-deok, un geomante, experto en Feng Shui y sepulturero y su ayudante Young-geun que es trabajador funerario.
They return to Korea to search for the grave, which is located on a hidden mountain that no one has ever visited. Kim Sang-deok, upon examining the land, realices that it is not sacred ground and does not want to exhume the corpse, but Lee Hwa-rim insists for the welfare of the child and proposes to perform a ritual with Bong-gil to contract evil and prevent harm to the workers. The exhumation takes place in a mystical scene, to the rhythm of drums, dance and mock sacrifice. This scene is very interesting.
The coffin was taken out without mishap, but after an event, evil is awakened, represented in two forms. One is the grandfather of the Park family, whose spirit awakens to destroy his family. At first, when the paranormal events begin to happen, logic tells this quartet that it’s just Grandpa, who hasn’t found peace and is angry for some reason with his family. But as time goes by they realice that there is something more powerful at the site of the exhumation and begin to investigate and find links to the history of Korea and its occupation by Japan, uncovering political betrayals, curses and countless connections between this burial and history.
Regresan a Corea para buscar la tumba, que se encuentra en una montaña oculta que nadie ha visitado nunca. Kim Sang-deok, al examinar el terreno, se da cuenta de que no es tierra sagrada y no quiere exhumar el cadáver, pero Lee Hwa-rim insiste por el bienestar del niño y propone realizar un ritual con Bong-gil para contraer el mal y evitar daños a los trabajadores. La exhumación tiene lugar en una escena mística, al ritmo de tambores, danza y simulacro de sacrificio. Esta escena es muy interesante.
El ataúd fue sacado sin contratiempos, pero tras un suceso, se despierta el mal, representado en dos formas. Una es el abuelo de la familia Park, cuyo espíritu despierta para destruir a su familia. Al principio, cuando empiezan a suceder los sucesos paranormales, la lógica les dice a este cuarteto que sólo se trata del abuelo, que no ha encontrado la paz y está enfadado por algún motivo con su familia. Pero a medida que pasa el tiempo se dan cuenta de que hay algo más poderoso en el lugar donde se produjo la exhumación y comienzan a investigar y a encontrar vínculos con la historia de Corea y su ocupación por Japón, descubriendo traiciones políticas, maldiciones e innumerables conexiones entre este enterramiento y la historia.
It’s a movie that has some complexity, so I had to go back to scenes to reread and understand the dialogues, after watching it I had to search the internet a bit more about Korean history and culture to understand the burials and so on. But I still liked it. Moreover, just like Shōgun this one I also liked watching it subtitled, because I have realized that I really like these languages.
Unlike other Korean productions like the one I mentioned at the beginning that I didn’t like the scenes or the performances, in this one I liked it a lot, the performances are very good and believable, the editing is also very good, you could feel that somber air that something was going to happen. Regarding the horror, although there are spirits and demons, I didn’t feel fear as in other movies, but it has a very attractive plot within the genre. It can be a bit complicated as I said but they explain the story, the Feng Shui and those esoteric things so you can slowly get the hang of it. But still, if at the end you are curious to know a little more, you do as I did when I investigated.
Es una película que tiene cierta complejidad, por lo que tuve que volver a las escenas para releer y entender los diálogos, después de verla tuve que buscar en internet un poco más sobre la historia y cultura coreana para entender los entierros y demás. Pero aun así me gustó. Es más, al igual que Shōgun esta también me gustó verla subtitulada, porque me he dado cuenta de que me gustan mucho estos idiomas.
A diferencia de otras producciones coreanas como la que mencioné al principio que no me gustaron las escenas o las actuaciones, en esta me gustó mucho, las actuaciones son muy buenas y creíbles, el montaje también es muy bueno, se sentía ese aire sombrío de que algo iba a pasar. Con respecto al terror, aunque hay espíritus y demonios, no sentí miedo como en otras películas, pero tiene una trama muy atractiva dentro del género. Puede ser un poco complicada como he dicho pero te explican la historia, el Feng Shui y esas cosas esotéricas para que poco a poco le vayas pillando el truco. Pero aun así, si al final tienes curiosidad por saber un poco más, haces como yo cuando investigué.

Es una buena película, un poco complicada cuando uno no sabe de esa historia y cultura Chaman, pero aún así es interesante, entretenida y te mantiene atento hasta el final.
Si te hizo buscar información adicional es porque es buena, con ganas de saber más y entender todo lo que viste, me gusta lo sobrenatural y saber sobre los karmas y el feng shui. Esta película tiene muchos elementos que me gustan. Si me la consigo, la veo.
