My students and their bicycles: My perspective on students cycling to school.

I am a teacher and I am proud to be one. I happen to always pay close attention to my students both in school and out of school and to be directly involved in whatever they do. In our school, few students cycle to school every day. As a result, I was interested in them to find out what they felt about cycling. So one faithful day, I decided to get closer to them and have a little discussion. From our discussion, I realized that their home is not too far from the school. They live in a trekkable distance. I was curious to know why their parents decided to allow them to ride to school instead of trekking.

So Monday at the close of school, we began to chat. I was able to take them pictures in the process. I asked one of them why they preferred to ride, even when their house was close by. He said, “Teacher, I love bicycles and I enjoy cycling,” he said those words with a smile on his face. I pressed further to find out why he loves cycling, he added that whenever he rides, he remembers what he's being taught in school. I was surprised to hear that cycling can make a student remember what he's been taught in school. I couldn't agree less with him.

This is very true, cycling enables students to remember what they are being taught because exercises open the minds and intellects of people to assimilate whatever is being presented or taught. As a school, we sometimes choose a day for sport for the students, because we know how important sporting activities are to the students. However, the boy is so intelligent in school. And I believe that it's a result of his bicycle. I finally advised him not to let the bicycle distract him from his studies.

Again, I had a chit-chat with another of my students and he also said that he loves cycling. Who doesn't love cycling? Parents should consider getting a bicycle for their children. Besides enhancing their academic performance, it helps in the rapid growth and development of the bones and muscles of a child.

However, as good and beautiful as students owning bicycles and riding to school might be, I have also noticed as a teacher that it can serve as an instrument for distraction. What do I mean? Most students might be spending lots of their time on the bicycle, going out with friends to ride on the street, and neglecting their studies. This might affect their academic performance. Hence, in this case, it is incumbent on parents to regulate and control their children on the use of bicycles.

Students owning a bicycle and riding to school can be of great benefit and at the same time can pose great danger like being involved in a road accident, breakdown of the bicycle on their way to school, and other unfortunate situations. Hence caregivers and parents should put all of these into consideration before making a decision.

Very true..maybe I will talk to the school management to think about including cycling as part of the school system

Cycling is fun and a great exercise. I don't disagree with the kid who says cycling helps him recall and assimilate better. The activity probably clears his mind and helps him think clearly.

Thinking about it now, maybe schools should include cycling to their sports portfolio. It will be amazing.

How nice that these kids cycle to school. But safety is important too. They should know that the road isn't a playground so they should pay attention at all times.
Maybe that is a good lesson to learn at school too.

This will also make a good proposal for them to be taught on safety measures while cycling...

How nice your work as a teacher, many congratulations for that, it is a beautiful job. Actually, cycling, is a very relaxing art in my opinion, I understand that those kids love cycling, it's just so much fun and healthy, good post!

Thank you
