The beginning of the cleanliness campaign starts from within oneself |

Today, I want to share some events from my personal life that have unfolded in various ways at every turn. I am Sophisticated by nature and always strive to keep my surroundings as clean and organized as possible. This habit has been within me since childhood, gradually becoming ingrained in my personality over time. Because of this habit, while I have received immense appreciation, I have also faced ridicule. However, fearing criticism and mockery, I have never deviated from my purpose. It's a fact that when you undertake a task individually, people usually don't care, but when you encourage others to do the same task, everyone starts pointing fingers at you. Whether it's about any good deed or inviting others to do good, this reaction is common everywhere.

So, this story begins from my school life. Children in school are often careless and don't pay much attention to what's good or bad. They eat and drink recklessly and litter around despite the presence of dustbins in the school. Although going to the dustbin and disposing of trash properly may seem like a hassle, children don't bother much about it. When I saw this situation among the children at school, especially during lunch breaks when I observed them throwing trash around despite having bought various snacks, biscuits, juices, etc., from the canteen, I felt really bad. I used to wonder how I, as an individual, could fix this? Whom should I explain? So, I came up with the idea that why not start this cleanliness campaign from myself. So, I decided that from now on, firstly, I will never throw my trash anywhere other than the dustbin, and secondly, along with that, I will also make sure to put at least one wrapper thrown by another child into the bin. However, it was impossible for me alone to collect all the trash of the entire school and put it in the dustbin. But whatever was within my capacity and what I could easily do, I considered it my responsibility to do at least that much.

During almost three years of my school life, I consistently maintained my routine of silently picking up my wrappers and those thrown by other students and depositing them into the dustbin. I never had to face any kind of resistance or difficulties as long as I silently carried out this task. However, when I reached the ninth grade and started encouraging others to join in, I faced negative reactions. As I mentioned earlier, nobody opposed me as long as I worked silently, but when I invited others to participate, they resisted. Due to my excellent grades, I was appointed as the class monitor in the ninth grade. Consequently, I continued to have ongoing discussions with my teachers regarding the class. It was during one of these conversations that I informed my teachers about the routine I had been following for the past three years. In response, they not only encouraged me but also provided me with full support in this endeavor. Now, I had the opportunity to involve other students in this task. I was thinking that together, as students, we would set an example. However, contrary to my expectations, my approach here was met with something different.

In the school grounds, in the classrooms, in the corridors, at the lunch area, everywhere, I initiated my campaign. Some good students supported me, through whom we managed to keep our classroom, corridor, and grounds clean. But there was also a significant number of students who started making fun of me. Not only did they mock me, but deliberately during cleanliness sessions, they would throw trash and laugh, telling me to pick it up too. I still remember the venomous words of the head boy of my school today. When I went to throw my wrapper in the dustbin, he would come in front of me with great insolence, throw his trash in front of me, laugh, and mock me as if I were his servant. I used to tell him that I pick up an additional student's wrapper besides mine and my quota is full, but the truth is it hurt me deeply. I was called such names that I cannot mention here.

As time passed, I transitioned from school life to college life. Many of my classmates in college were my friends from school who were well aware of my habits. Here too, they didn't stop trolling me and would mention my habit in front of teachers, later laughing about it. One day, my classmates mentioned this habit in front of our English teacher. They thought the teacher would find my action foolish. However, contrary to expectations, the teacher praised me. They found this act commendable and encouraged me to continue. They were very pleased with it and continued to support me. Days turned into months, and I entered the realm of university life. In universities, there are various departments for different subjects, and the number of students is usually very high. Additionally, students' attitudes vary greatly. By this time, I had matured, so I didn't openly invite everyone. Perhaps I thought I shouldn't make a spectacle of myself here. However, people in my department and classmates were aware of my habit. We always kept our classroom and corridors clean. In university, since students are usually more mature, they show more positive behavior rather than childish antics. Every flower has its thorns, but thorns don't affect the fragrance of the flower. My routine continued with constant perseverance.

Some people object, asking why we should dirty our hands when there are designated workers for garbage collection. They argue that if municipal workers are there to pick up trash, why should we bother? If garbage collectors take a day off, will we continue to live in filth? Certainly not. In a country like Pakistan, especially in cities like Karachi, which consistently rank among the world's most polluted cities, if everyone shifts their responsibility onto others, the city will deteriorate further. Therefore, I don't want my city or my country to remain conducive to a healthy life. If every individual in this country, indeed in the whole world, takes responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, we can make this world even more beautiful than it is now, as it is currently showing us. Because drop by drop, rivers are formed. Start this practice and you will feel immense joy. Yes, there may be challenges, as I have also faced. Even today, when I meet old friends, they remember me as the cleanliness guy. They might be mocking me from their perspective, but I don't see it as humiliation because cleanliness is half of faith.

I would like to conclude my story with these lines from the famous Urdu poet Ahmed Faraz:

"Shikwa-e-zulmat-e-shab se to kahin behtar tha
Apne hissey ki koi shama jalate jaate"

(Complaining about the darkness of night would have been better;
Lighting one's own lamp along the way.)

Most people do not care. Even if they start calling you names when you stand up for what is right because to them, they do not see it as something they could do, especially to help humanity and the environment.
When you start sharing tasks with others, they point at you, call you trash names etc but in the end, there is someone who is willing to support what you do in the presence of others while keeping the bad ones mute.
I enjoyed reading this.

It doesn't matter to them as long as I don't involve them. Some people have this mindset that change is simply impossible. I appreciate that you took the time to comment; it boosts my morale. Maybe I wouldn't have written this otherwise, but Taha insisted, so I felt compelled to share it.

Hahaha. Yes, people do not believe in change and are not ready or interested to do what needs to be done.
Yes, I am glad too to come across your post and it was an insightful read.

A great duty you served silently. Not many are concerned at present but only few can see the worth of doing such silent positive deeds. And those who knows the importance of your this ability will praise you for entire life!

I've spent my whole life surrounded by such people. There are also people in my life who chip in and help me. So, I'm not alone. I've done good deeds because that's what I've learned from this world. Every interaction shapes our thoughts when we engage with others.

I miss you a lot. Time isn't as plentiful as before. I wish I could stop time and we could have chats and calls like before, but all friends seem to be gradually drifting away. I wish I could pause time and we could sit together over a cup of tea, chatting away.

Sure buddy! Entire hive community is ready to have tea with you!

You mention that you have had the habit of being tidy and keeping everything clean since your childhood. That makes me wonder if your parents instilled it in you or was it something you decided to do on your own? I would like to know this in particular.

What the unhappy, insolent child did to you in front of you is a provocation and without a doubt it is something that I would not tolerate today. I'm sorry but I would seek revenge. I can't stand idiots like that (it makes my blood boil just reading that this happened to you). And although you don't mention the word he said to you, I'm pretty sure what it was, how despicable.

I suppose human behavior is the same no matter what country you are in, I have experienced similar bullying situations while I was at school. People in general, the average human being, tend to look for ease in things, and I understand that they find it easier for someone else (in this case you) to take care of the cleaning, but it is because of that same reluctance, that same laziness or carelessness that we don't want to do things, that we have a world full of idiots.

I see with great anguish how hundreds of young people prefer the dopamine release of watching Tik Tok, YouTube or any other social network, before reading a good book by Honore de Balzac, Aldous Huxley or Isaac Asimov, which will surely leave them Much more than looking at a social network.

The important thing about what you say is that you realized that you can be an agent of change, but you must have a lot of patience, be tolerant and have a lot of discipline, and although I don't know you well, you give me the impression of being someone very rigid and with strong principles.

I hope that today, you continue to maintain that respect for planet Earth, because it is dying, and we are to blame for contaminating it.

Parents play a big role in building our characters and they teach us good and bad things, no doubt my parents taught me to make my environment clean but yes somehow I can give credit to myself too for starting this movement as I observed things on my own and started cleaning myself, and my environment.

Daily taking a shower habit.........
Childhood Lessons: The Sweet Lies, Savings, and Surprises!

For the words that I didn't mention, I don't want to discourage people, obviously we meet people here who love to discourage us when we start doing something. but I don't want to discourage my people by hearing those words.

Hehe, people say the first impression is the last impression I'm glad my first impression impressed you. Last but not least, I will not let this planet die, I will keep working and taking small steps to make our environment cleaner.

I was excited when I started reading. The same situation as mine. I also like cleaning and hate dirtiness. But I am also a shy boy so I don't make an effort like you. Because I was so afraid of people that they would tease me etc and I started to cry immediately. But I am very happy that someone has the potential to encourage this mentality. I remember the hadees of Hazrat Muhammad P.B.U.H
Cleanliness is half the faith.

I don't know if being shy is a good thing or not. In today's world, if we remain shy, we often lag behind in many aspects, I believe. These cleaning-related challenges are nothing compared to the challenges against hivepakistan. I'm inherently stubborn. In good things, I'm stubborn. When I decide to do something, I put my heart and soul into it, and I keep moving forward towards my goal, step by step, until my last breath.

It's true. Here, most kids have that mentality. If you cared too much about the world, it wouldn't let you live. If you were in Karachi, you would feel the matter of cleanliness more. Islamabad and the village where your house is, it's a very clean place. Still, wrappers are strewn everywhere. I hope that from today, you'll join me in this intention of cleanliness. If you hadn't asked to share a bit of personal life yesterday, I wouldn't have shared my deepest secret with you. And after Corona, I don't remember many old memories. Sharing a bit of personal life with you yesterday felt good. But still, that's enough for now; I still value my personal space.

I have been following almost all of your posts for the past few days, and believe me, reading your Urdu gives me great pleasure. I have read your story from the beginning to the end. In our society, as long as you continue to do good work quietly, you will not face any kind of problems. However, when you invite someone to join this work, you will certainly face difficulties. But we should always encourage good deeds without any hesitation. You have successfully carried out your cleanliness campaign from school life to university, for which you deserve praise. You have played the role of a rebel in society, and remember, a rebel is not an ordinary person. It requires courage, determination, patience, tolerance, and perseverance. In the end, I will just say keep writing, you are writing very well. Thank you.

I wonder how a child with so many misbehaviours can stand his goal. I deeply appreciate your passion 👏🏼❤️
I was not a very tidy child but things change with time.

There is no doubt that Karachi is considered to be the dirtiest city in Pakistan. I am lucky to live in a village where there is less pollution than cities and there are green fields🌲

Thanks for admiring and appreciating me.

Oh, one more thing, if you've never visited Karachi, then when you think of Karachi, you probably think of Lyari, which is often depicted in the news and media. I know Karachi can be dirty in general, but there are some good areas where many educated (remember, having a degree doesn't always mean being educated) people live, and they keep their surroundings clean. For example, Gulshan-e-Jamal.

I know many places in Karachi are very clean and most places are dirty. Because I have visited Karachi two times. There is no doubt that Karachi is seen in the news as very clean but in reality the place is unbreathable

There is no doubt that Karachi is seen in the news as very clean but in reality the place is unbreathable

I want to say that in Karachi news, only a few backward areas are highlighted, but in reality, most of Karachi is clean. However, buying a house in Karachi has become expensive. Now Karachi has expanded so much that areas like New Karachi and North Karachi have also emerged. Generally it is considered that karachi is dirty but not all of karachi.

I always say that the change we want to see starts from us. If you want to make change, you should initiate and that’s exactly what you did.

I really hate dirty environments with my whole life. I just can’t help it.😂 I think we have so much in common.

Haha, maybe we do have a lot in common. There's no doubt that change starts with us. I've only taken small steps to clean the environment, and I would love it if others also took these small steps to make their environment clean.

Once you’ve started, people would join you.

You have done well by keeping consistent to your actions and that what really matters. Actions speaks. Not everyone would be like us. You showcased your personality and the fact about that is that in your own immediate vicinity it would remain clean and those that fail to keep their environment clean will live the trashy lifestyle they wanted.

It's wonderful to hear that people appreciate the movement I've initiated. Yet, sometimes I ponder: if I weren't spearheading it, perhaps someone else would step up to ensure environmental cleanliness, maybe even you. People often fail to grasp the significance of leading a clean lifestyle. However, I remain driven and resolute, committed to persisting until I can enlighten them about their misconceptions.

Well done mate! You really done a great job. Cleanliness is half of faith. It's our duty to keep our surrounding, our homeland neat and clean.

Thank you for your appreciation. Without a doubt, cleanliness is half of faith, and as Muslims, it is our duty to perform good deeds. Cleaning the environment is also one of the deeds that Allah Almighty likes.

Cleanliness is part of our faith. A clean body is responsible for healthy body and a healthy body is responsible for healthy mind which is indeed required to live a sound life.

Your story reminded me of my school tume when i used to notice eating lunch without washing hands. They used ti throw wrappers of cookies around seeing discipline proctor is not nearby.
The small act of you if disseminated properly and each one started care of cleanliness and sophistication, our society will look more beautiful

Again a really good topic to talk about.💫🦋

You can also help people by taking small steps, spreading the message through your drawing skills. Undoubtedly, people should feel ashamed of their actions, as they are only leaving a mess for future generations.

You've done a great job. Indeed Allah will give you a great reward for this act. We all know cleanliness is half faith. It shows the purity of a man. Those who used to make fun of yours do not know the difference between good or bad.
It is our farz(duty) to live clean and make our society clean. So everyone live a healthy life. This is a great lesson for me too. Inshallah i will also took a step for cleanliness.

Thanks for your compliment. Perhaps they don't understand the difference between cleanliness and dirt, but they fail to realize that they are creating a mess for future generations. The damage caused to future generations due to this negligence can be significant.

It's wonderful to know that I've inspired you. I'd love to hear about the steps you plan to take in the future to make the environment cleaner.

I feel you, I had some similar problems at school. I teach my kids that throwing trash in the floor is bad, I think once my daughter brought a similar problem to me. She saw a friend littering and she told to the child that it was wrong. the other kid decided to start trolling at her... that really sucks!

I don't understand how children can be so cruel when they're just children. It's the responsibility of their parents to teach them right from wrong. They represent their parents in school, yet they seem indifferent. Even their parents don't seem to care.

Ah, society, and people—we can't change them. We can never change them but we can always do our part and stay positive.

You solved your own questioning hehehe, they are just a parent's reflection. Kids aren't born with prejudices, parents just put them in their heads.

I have a story nothing related to trash. My former neighbor has two kids, one daughter that is the same age as my oldest ( she was 5 at the time of the occurrence ) and a boy aged 7 also in that time. Both kids were bullying other kids who weren't dressing like the sex that they were born. The mother was complaining about why she was called since kids do that stuff and it was normal... When a parent reacts this way, ignoring a problem it is because the parent agrees with that.

Let me share a fictional story related to it.

Son: "You do it because your parents taught you this," the son said to his father.

Father: "So, I taught you to disrespect my parents?"

Son: "But I was just appreciating your teachings."

Father: "No, you were disrespecting my parents' teachings."

It's better for people to laugh at us when doing the right thing than wrong stuff.

Cleaning the surrounding is a good habit and a healthy lifestyle.

I never mind when people laugh, but sometimes it hurts because I used to be one of them, trying to clean up the environment. Yet, the response I received wasn't always positive.

But that's okay because we can't change people. Of course, it's a good habit, and hopefully, others will learn it too.

Our past Nigerian president said that the change we seek for begins with you and me
I must commend you for this great ack of kindness regardless of how you were being mocked by many
Sincerely, I doubt if I can do this . The only thing I do regularly is cautioning anyone I see lettering the environment. This is so good of you. You have set a nice standard for people to follow

Thanks for sharing

(From our conversation)

Your doubts are gone, xD
Only 3 more comments to reply to before I can publish my next post. See, I can be late, but I try not to leave any comment unanswered.

Now, about your comment, I believe if you teach your three sons not to litter, it would be enough as a mom's duty being fulfilled (not saying they litter now). I wish I had a cool mom like you; at least I would look more stunning in selfies with you!
Being a mom of three is not easy. I wonder how you manage it. But then again, my own mom has one son and three daughters. In general, it's hard to be a mom.

I am guilty of throwing paper milk shake glasses of me and my children on the road and not throwing them in the dustbin perhaps I should take a Que from your examples.

Your children will follow the examples you set for them.

You're welcome, Ahmed. Sometimes, all we need is a little encouragement to persevere. When I hear my friends expressing their unwavering support, regardless of my endeavors, I feel incredibly fortunate.

This is a Junk shop i frequent because they sell Plastic chairs and spare computer parts like mouse and keyboards for dirt cheap.

We have a Recycle and Repurpose ethos. So i guess it was already taught to us at a young age.

For me since i don't have much stuff or a big room. Its not that hard to organize and find what i need.

Despite any financial challenges, you've embraced simplicity and focus on what truly matters. Your commitment shows that wealth isn't about what you have, but the richness found in living with intention.

People usually think that by collecting garbages, or cleaning is only the duty of cleaners. We only have the purpose of eating, and then leaving the trash at the very same place.
It is really a remarkable approach in the way you manage the trash. Beside this, the thing which is more appreciate able is your consistency. By seeing the other attitudes towards you, you didn't hesitate for a single moment.
It shows that what other says about you, nothing matter just keep going.✨️

Then, such people become a cause of us ingesting microplastics, especially through fish.

You reminded me of this quote:

This is not the end, for there is no end. Death, Life, Destruction, and Creation are threads of the same fabric. No matter who you worship, where you call home, we are all connected in this life and in the face of destruction, you can despair alone or persevere together.

Cleanliness is a very good habit. I also have the habit and I always used to throw my trash in dustbin but I never made any champaign about it like you. But fortunately in university a group taken steps like you and I joined the champaign.
Everything starts with single person and turn into a huge thing and you set a good example of it although it has taken a good amount of time.

In today's era, throwing your trash in a bin is also appreciatable. Since there are no specific laws related to littering in our countries, we have to take responsibility for ourselves. Also, Thanks for your appreciation.
