This is something...interesting in a dark kind of way that I stumbled upon today while browsing the news on reddit.
So here's the quick gist. Apparently some municipalities in Japan that are low on cash are turning on the uncollected cremated ashes for a quick buck 😂
Specifically, extracting the precious metals out of them like gold, silver etc, with the Gifu Prefecture being the latest to join this growing trend, with plans to begin the program the next fiscal year.
Of course this has sparked some debate, with some citizens and municipalities supporting it as a way to make money out of thin air... Well, short of.
I was surprised however to see that in some areas there's really not much of debate. For example in Tajimi surveys show the public support to be up to 95%. What the actual fuck!
Fyi, the process involves collecting unclaimed ashes and extracting stuff like gold, silver, palladium. These come from dental fillings, implants, artificial joints. Japanese people generally live to be quite old (or so I hear) so I guess there's plenty of that shit in their asses, lol.
I was also surprised to find out that this isn't a new practice. Apparently, cities like Nagoya have been doing this for decades, with annual sales exceeding 200 million yen. That's about 1,285,950.00 USD. Mizunami and Asahikawa also run similar programs.
However other cities have a different opinion. For example officials in Shizuoka are against the practice due to ethical considerations and cultural sensitivities.
In Japan as a whole there are no clear regulations on the matter so in the end it's a municipal decision.
Personally, I really don't know how I feel about this. I mean it's not like I believe much in god or the after life so it does make sense from a financial perspective.... Yet all I could keep thinking is that this would make good ol Hitler boy proud, lmao.
