Enriching Indoor Cats' Lives: Training Coco to Walk with Me.

Here's Coco, walking side by side with me on a leash. I never thought I could train a cat to walk on a leash; it initially sounded funny, but I decided to try it.

We started Coco walking on a leash as early as 9 weeks old. We gradually introduced her to the harness by allowing her to sniff it all the time with treats. We put it near her food or by her bed for a few days. We associated it with fun; sometimes we put the harness indoors and played with her, giving her strokes and plenty of attention and praise.

Once she was comfortable, we practiced indoors with the leash to get her used to the sensation of having something attached to the harness.

Then we went for a short outdoor walk and let her explore. We increased it gradually, and we've gone further every day until she got used to it.

Now I find it fun taking her out.

We even visit older neighbors and cheer them up, and she is becoming a little celebrity in our village.

Sometimes, she gets anxious with other animals, cars, and other people we meet...

Then she jumps straight into the basket.

and used to climb my shoulder, but I stopped her as I got scratched.

Cat instinct when frightened is to flee or hide.

It does take lots of patience and time. But treats, and praises for her brave behavior always help.

It is a rewarding experience, especially since she seems to enjoy it now. It is a great way to enrich an indoor cat's life, offering new sights, smells, and experiences.

She gets to eat the grass that she likes.

Play by the streams.

In exchange for our efforts, walking with our cats can also offer us the chance to enjoy the outdoors together, providing both physical exercise and mental stimulation for both parties and strengthening our bonds.

Moreover, the responsibility of walking our cat encourages us to get outside, promoting well-being.

With all these benefits, the effort put into training and walking our cats is undoubtedly worth it.

Happy Caturday, everyone.

Crikey, I'd say you get some funny looks!

Hahaha! you are right @deirdyweirdy and it is happening but she is my cat and I look after her well so I don't care what they think. 😄
