Listening to sweet music in my ears while writing this post makes me feel a lot better. Knowing that you’re being theoretical and practical at the same time. The top five things anyone who meets me would figure out is, “This lady doesn’t play with music.” And it’s true. I grew up in a family that simply adores music. From Mom’s tales of her nightingale-worthy renditions in the choir to my Dad’s, not-so-subtle boasting of his days as a DJ.
And even if I hadn’t grown up in a house that was characterised by music, the peace I have when good music is blasting in my ears is enough to keep it with me forever.
Where music history is concerned, I may not know too much but I do have some opinions from my educational background on theoretical music. While I love what Opera stands for, I don’t know if I’d have been glad in an era where that was the predominant genre of music. It’s nice but not just my type of music.
When it comes to classical music, however, I did enjoy listening to a work like “Für Elise” by Beethoven and found even Romantic music lovely since that genre celebrates the love of nature, individuality and emotional expression. The type of things I dealt with. I know Chopin was one of the lead musicians in that era.
Where my kind of music comes into play, however, is from Jazz. I can’t begin to talk about how much I adore Jazz music. I have an entire playlist where there are no words. Just smooth instrumental Jazz music. Something about hearing the trombone, the piano and all the types of saxophones fused to make sweet, delirious music, gets me. I figure that there might be more instruments involved in creating Jazz music but I mention these because those are the instruments I actively hear.
I’m not sure if I’ve gotten the eras chronologically arranged but I do believe that this is the order to which they gained prominence. There might be more genres in between but then again, I’m no music historian.
Moving on to my all-time favourite: Rhythm and Blues. I have talked about my love for the R&B genre of music once or twice on the Blockchain but I don’t think I shall tire of it. Whoever created this genre definitely had his or her head on right. Or maybe the person didn’t because R&B is an otherworldly kind of music.
Others might be more Western, but R&B draws me to my African roots more than any other genre, aside Afrobeat of course, which subjectively should be the most exciting and catchy kind of music known to man. Winks. Blues feels so soulful, brimming with love and all the right emotions that you’re immediately transported.
I do respect everyone’s tastes in music but respectfully, I can’t be cool with anyone that doesn’t like R&B. It’s truly majestic and hands down my favourite genre of music. I’m not sure how familiar I am with the earlier Blues musicians but to give you a description of good Blues music, I look at the types of Lionel Richie, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, Elton John, George Benson, Boyz II Men, etc
Over time, R&B is no longer a popular genre of music, in the sense that it’s mostly pop and rock music that rule which I have no problems with. I love K-pop and other types of pop music since I genuinely feel like it’s not enough to discredit a song because it doesn’t fit into a specific genre if you haven’t taken the time to listen to it first.
As far as the lyrics of a song don’t make me cringe and I can find the rhythm soothing or catchy in an exciting sort of way, it’s good music for me. Before now, I would have gone into a full rant on how the kind of songs that are popular these days are more or less nothing to write home about. From tacky lyrics that scream of objectification to repetitive rhythm. And while I don’t feel any less, I think people are just entitled to whatever music they feel gives them joy.
Each time I want to give up on any current songs being pleasing to my ear, one would come that would completely blow me off track with just how beautiful it is. Either way, I think music is one of the best things that happened to humans and it’s wonderful to see that a lot of us can find music that grants us solace. To all music lovers and makers alike, let’s keep the magic happening.
