For this Wednesday Walk, I bring you to the Port of Montreal on the promenade d'Iberville also known as Grand Quai. This part of the port was redeveloped in 2018 to provide better conditions for ships calling at Montreal. This was definitely necessary, and the resulting boardwalk is truly beautiful, with views of the St. Lawrence River and downtown Montreal.
Pour ce Wednesday Walk, je vous amène dans le port de Montréal sur la promenade d'Iberville aussi appelée Grand Quai. Cette partie du port a été réaménagée en 2018 pour accueillir dans de meilleures conditions les navires qui font escale à Montréal. Cela était vraiment nécessaire et la promenade ainsi faite est vraiment très belle avec la vue sur le fleuve Saint Laurent et le centre ville de Montréal.
The Grand Quai is located in the port of Old Montreal, Montreal's tourist district par excellence. This wharf welcomes visitors disembarking from their ships during their stopover in Montreal.
Le Grand Quai se trouve dans le port dans le Vieux-Montréal, le quartier touristique par excellence de Montréal. Ce quai permet d'accueillir les visiteurs descendant de leurs navires lors de leur escale à Montréal.

Follow me on the promenade d'Iberville, a green roof boardwalk over the St. Lawrence River. We arrive at the Grand Quai via the Old Port. The photo suggests a large road, but in fact there are only pedestrians and bicycles. Only the road along the quay has cars and buses to get to the parking on the left in the photo.
Vous allez me suivre sur la promenade d'Iberville, un toit végétalisé sur le fleuve Saint Laurent. Nous arrivons par le Vieux Port pour arriver devant le Grand Quai. On peut penser sur la photo qu'il s'agit d'une grande route mais en fait il n'y a que des piétons et des vélos. Seule la route longeant le quai a des voitures et des bus pour aller dans le parking qui se situe sur la gauche sur la photo.
For the record, this wharf was built in 1901 and later became the ferry terminal for new immigrants. The station was named in honor of Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville (1661-1706), New France hero, explorer and soldier. There are numerous panels explaining the history of the site and the town on this promenade.
Pour l'histoire, ce quai fut construit en 1901 qui deviendra par la suite la gare maritime accueillant les nouveaux immigrants. Cette gare rendait hommage à Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville (1661-1706), héros de la Nouvelle France, explorateur et militaire. Il y a de nombreux panneaux explicatifs de l'histoire du lieu et de la ville sur cette promenade.
Climbing the stairs, we arrive on the green roof, where for the moment there's nothing but grass. Spring has only just begun in Montreal. But in a few weeks, it'll be full of flowers. Right from the start, there's a beautiful view of some of the city's iconic architectural features, such as Silo n°5. It hasn't been in use for several years, and studies are underway to see how it can be transformed (museum, condo...). The boat docked in front is a spa, the Bota Bota, with a jacuzzi on the deck and a large glass-enclosed sauna overlooking Montreal's skyline. Really cool...
En montant les escaliers, nous arrivons sur le toit végétalisé ou pour l'instant il n'y a que de l'herbe. Le printemps ne fait que commencer à Montréal. Mais dans quelques semaines, cela sera rempli de fleurs. Dès le début, on a une très belle vue sur quelques éléments architecturaux emblématiques de la ville comme le Silo n°5. Il n'est plus utilisé depuis plusieurs année, des études sont en cours pour savoir comme le transformer (musée, condo...). Le bateau accosté devant est un spa, le Bota Bota avec jacuzzi sur le pont et un grand sauna vitré avec vue sur les immeubles de Montréal. Vraiment cool...
The observation tower is a recent addition, perhaps 2021. It looks like a big Tetris block that was left there 😀. Unfortunately when I visited, it was closed for a private event. Must get a nice view from up there.
La tour d'observation est un ajout récent, peut-être 2021. Elle ressemble à un gros bloc Tetris qui a été oublié là 😀. Malheureusement lors de mon passage, elle était fermée pour un événement privé. On doit avoir une belle vue de là haut.
Turning around, the view is already pretty good with Montreal skyline. A few more steps and a huge BONJOUR has been installed, perfect for photos and selfies of tourists 😀... And my photos too...
En se retournant, la vue est déjà bien avec le centre ville de Montréal et ses bâtiments. Encore quelques pas, un énorme BONJOUR a été installé, parfait pour les photos et les selfies des touristes 😀... Et mes photos...
A new area is being developed between the two buildings on the quay, with this little park and these colorful Adirondack chairs. I have a feeling that this will be a popular summer spot, where you can enjoy the coolness of the river. As it happens, a boat offering daily excursions was back.
Une nouvelle partie est en cours d'aménagement entre les deux bâtiments du quai avec ce petit parc et ces chaises Adirondack colorées. Je sens que ce lieu va être apprécié l'été pour avoir la fraicheur du fleuve. Justement, un bateau qui propose des excursions journalières était de retour.
After the tower, you can go down some stairs to this riverside esplanade laid out with benches and these funny iron structures 🔼. The tower is just as strange on this side.
Après la tour, on peut descendre quelques escalieurs pour arriver à cette esplanade au bord du fleuve aménagée avec des bancs et ces drôles de structures en fer 🔼. La tour est tout aussi étrange de ce côté.
At the end of the quay, there's a beautiful view of Habitat 67, housing designed by architect Moshe Safdie in the 60's for the 1967 World's Fair. It looks like a Lego block building. Too bad you can't visit this architecturally astonishing complex.
Au bout du quai, on a une très belle vue sur Habitat 67, des logements conçus par l'architecte Moshe Safdie dans les années soixante pour l'Exposition Universelle de 1967. Cela ressemble à une construction en bloc de Lego. Dommage qu'on ne peut pas visiter cet ensemble à l'architecture étonnante.
Returning to the Grand Quai entrance, you can see that there's still work to be done to improve the old structures of the Port of Montreal. I don't know what's going to become of this old tower for loading ships. But given the result of this quay, I think it's going to be worth it.
En repartant à l'entrée du Grand Quai, on peut voir qu'il y a encore du travail à faire pour améliorer les anciennes structures du port de Montréal. Je ne sais pas que va devenir cette ancienne tour pour charger les bateaux. Mais vu le résultat de ce quai, je pense que cela va valoir le coup.
