⚔️ I waited to publish this post until today. Today is a good time to remember the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. This anniversary is today, I took the photos about two weeks ago while traveling around Italy.
The aim of the expedition is to reach the top of the mountain where there is a cemetery, near the monastery that you can see in the clouds.
Czekałem z publikacją tego posta do dnia dzisiejszego. Dzisiaj jest odpowiedni moment na wspomnienie 80 rocznica bitwy o Monte Cassino. Ta rocznica przypada właśnie dzisiaj, zdjęcia wykonałem jakieś dwa tygodnie temu podróżując po Włoszech.
Celem wyprawy jest dotarcie na szczyt góry gdzie jest cmentarz, nieopodal klasztoru, który widzicie w chmurach.

The Battle of Monte Cassino, also known as the Battle of the Monastery of Monte Cassino or the Battle of Rome, was a series of four battles fought during World War II between Allied forces and German troops who defended the Gustav Line in Italy. The fighting lasted from January to May 1944. Monte Cassino is a hill with a Benedictine monastery that the Germans turned into a heavily fortified defensive position.
Bitwa o Monte Cassino, znana także jako bitwa o klasztor Monte Cassino lub bitwa o Rzym, była serią czterech bitew stoczonych w czasie II wojny światowej między alianckimi siłami zbrojnymi a wojskami niemieckimi, które broniły Linii Gustawa we Włoszech. Walki trwały od stycznia do maja 1944 roku. Monte Cassino jest wzgórzem z klasztorem benedyktyńskim, które Niemcy zamienili w silnie ufortyfikowaną pozycję obronną.

⚔️ Poles, operating as part of the 2nd Polish Corps commanded by General Władysław Anders, played a key role in the last, fourth attack on Monte Cassino, which began on May 11, 1944. After heavy fighting, the Poles managed to capture the ruins of the monastery on May 18, 1944. It was one of the most important Allied victories on the Italian front, which opened the way to the liberation of Rome on June 4, 1944.
Polacy, działający w ramach 2. Korpusu Polskiego dowodzonego przez generała Władysława Andersa, odegrali kluczową rolę w ostatnim, czwartym ataku na Monte Cassino, który rozpoczął się 11 maja 1944 roku. Po ciężkich walkach, Polakom udało się zdobyć ruiny klasztoru 18 maja 1944 roku. Było to jedno z najważniejszych zwycięstw aliantów na froncie włoskim, które otworzyło drogę do wyzwolenia Rzymu, co nastąpiło 4 czerwca 1944 roku.

⚔️ The fighting for Monte Cassino was extremely fierce and bloody, and many soldiers from both sides died. The Poles who took part in the battle gained great recognition for their heroism and sacrifice. In honor of the fallen Polish soldiers, a war cemetery was established near the monastery, which is a place of memory and tribute to those who gave their lives.
Walki o Monte Cassino były niezwykle zacięte i krwawe, a zginęło w nich wielu żołnierzy z obu stron. Polacy, którzy brali udział w bitwie, zyskali duże uznanie za swoje bohaterstwo i poświęcenie. Na cześć poległych żołnierzy polskich utworzono cmentarz wojenny w pobliżu klasztoru, który jest miejscem pamięci i hołdu dla tych, którzy oddali swoje życie.

⚔️ Italian forces fighting on the Allied side also took part in the Battle of Monte Cassino, although their contribution was relatively smaller compared to the main Allied contingents such as the Americans, British, Indians, New Zealanders, French and Poles. This battle is symbolic for Polish-Italian military history, showing cooperation and a common desire to defeat the German occupier.
W bitwie o Monte Cassino brały również udział siły włoskie walczące po stronie aliantów, choć ich wkład był stosunkowo mniejszy w porównaniu do głównych kontyngentów alianckich, takich jak Amerykanie, Brytyjczycy, Hindusi, Nowozelandczycy, Francuzi i Polacy. Bitwa ta jest symboliczna dla polsko-włoskiej historii wojennej, pokazując współpracę i wspólne dążenie do pokonania niemieckiego okupanta.
⚔️ Before entering the cemetery, near the monastery, there is the Memorial Museum of the 2nd Polish Corps in Monte Cassino. The museum presents documents, photographs and multimedia exhibitions showing the history of the Battle of Monte Cassino and the heroism of Polish soldiers. The most important place, however, is the cemetery, which is the resting place for approximately 1,070 Polish soldiers, constituting an important place of national memory for every Pole.
Przed wejściem na cmentarz, nieopodal klasztoru znajduje się Muzeum Pamięci 2. Korpusu Polskiego w Monte Cassino. Muzeum prezentuje dokumenty, fotografie oraz multimedialne ekspozycje, ukazujące historię bitwy o Monte Cassino i heroizm polskich żołnierzy. Najważniejszym miejscem jest jednak cmentarz, który jest miejscem spoczynku dla około 1070 polskich żołnierzy, stanowiąc ważne miejsce pamięci narodowej dla każdego Polaka.
