Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #84

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

How the Little Red Riding Hoods were saved from the Big Bad Wolf

Afterwards, every now and then, we joked that we had missed the chance to be great models and the chance to see Europe, but surely behind us our guardian angels were sighing with relief that they had done the job of looking after us.

Curator's comment :

Nancybriti1 writes an intense CNF story about a time she and two friends hitch hiked and were picked up by a man who began to groom them for some purpose, which he said was modeling. They managed to convince him they had to stop at a bakery, and got out of the car. Nicely done!

Highlighting @wongi, with the story:

In The Midst of Veterans

All I could feel was a rush of adrenaline and the squeeze wasn't comforting in the slightest. Silently, I prayed that everything went well.

Curator's comment :

Wongi writes a very charming CNF about how she got moved to the front in her dance competition because the lead dancer did not show up. She was only six years old and the youngest of the group, but she did very well. Nicely written and very entertaining.

Highlighting @steinhammer, with the story:

A Night Out

Tim, having been married for a long time, accepted his fate and went out on Friday nights. Marrying young, he felt the aftershocks of missing out on certain experiences and the impossibility of living them, which increasingly pushed him into depression. AK, being single, didn't fully understand Tim's problems, but Will, who was also married, tried to comfort him with a bit more understanding. Actually, Tim's life wasn't too difficult compared to AK, who had learned a new language in this foreign country, adapted to a new culture, and left his homeland, family, and loved ones behind. For him, not marrying was an opportunity, and even solitude was a gift.

Curator's comment :

The story is rich in detail and atmosphere. He is a very good, sensitive writer.

Highlighting @george-dee, with the story:

A Race Against Time

rushed out to the bank ATM and withdrew all the money in my account at once before embarking on the journey back to school. While on the bus, my eyes were filled with tears as I checked the time every now and then. My friends didn't help matters as they kept calling me repeatedly to know my whereabout.

Curator's comment :

The story's strength is in the author's ability to engage readers.

Highlighting @loveth97, with the story:

Math fever

As time went on, I discovered the beginning of statistics is the easy part. Statistics involves a lot of data and formulas, the more intriguing the topic got, the more complicated it got. We bought statistics tables for solving most questions. Before we knew it, the time for the quiz was fast approaching.

Curator's comment :

The author recounts her experience with math and physics teachers, but mostly math. These teachers were not always very good. While this would seem to be a dull subject for a writing piece, the author manages to make her experience interesting, and her challenge relatable. She builds to a crisis, which is a test that is almost impossible to pass, and she resolves the crisis well. She uses details to highlight the events and pulls in friends to comment on the experience they all share as the story moves along. These third party comments help to give perspective. All in all, a very good story.

This Week's Prompt 84:

"The grass is always greener on the other side"

Dictionary.com's definition : People are never satisfied with their own situation; they always think others have it better.

  • Perhaps your envy of a friend’s good fortune, circumstance, or wealth made you forget to value your own blessings, with dire consequences.
  • Maybe the “grass” on the other side looked “greener” to you until you were forced to tread in those pastures against your will.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
