One of the things I always like to do - apart from watching anime and movies - is to listen to music and I'm one of those people who say "listen to everything". However, my tastes are both varied and exquisite, in a sense. Among the musical genres that I most like to listen to on a daily basis is one of those that are very popular nowadays on social networks like TikTok, for example. This genre is popularly called "Phonk" and this genre is what I want to talk about today.
WARNING: The genre we are going to talk and listen to in this post is not recommended for hypertensive or hypersensitive people who suffer with loud sounds. It requires great care and consideration on the part of the reader.
What is Phonk?
Before explaining what this is, I want to make it clear that this genre (formerly known as a subgenre of Hip-Hop) can not be confused with Electronic Music, or EDM, which is something very different. Although they are related in terms of some subgenres that are handled, this one has a very different origin and sound than the one we hear from electronic music.
Originally, Phonk was a subgenre of Hip-Hop (inspired mostly by Memphis Rap) that was born after combining some samples of songs from other genres such as Blues or Soul with strong percussion sounds made to computer and beats similar to Lo-Fi, in addition to distortions and voice recordings of some Memphis rap's. However, since more than 10 years ago, it has been evolving, combining with other genres thanks to many DJs of today, until finally becoming a genre as such, something much stronger and far from what it originally was.
And it was not only the influence of other genres, but also the different cultures where some of these DJs and Producers came from that turned Phonk into something both strong (similar or even much stronger than Dubstep or Hardcore) and slow, moving and catchy. Currently, the genre is very recognizable in social networks, such as TikTok, where it is used a lot in car clips, "GYM's Bro's" or even in some Latin American memes. They are also very popular for their "Slowed + Reverb" or "Fast" versions.
Why do I like Phonk so much?
At a time when I literally got tired of listening to so much Rock, Pop, Ballads or even Electronic music, I stumbled on TikTok with these Samples made with a rhythm and melody that sounded both strong and catchy. This genre that they called Phonk caught me and I started looking for more songs of this genre until I got a repertoire of hundreds and hundreds of tracks.
Its rhythm, both fast and slow, its melody both strong and soft and the perfect combination of percussions with samples and distorted sounds enchants me. This generates a kind of euphoria that surely is what hooks many people of both my generation and the current one that is so fascinated by listening to this kind of music. Also, this genre is very much related to the GYMs, the well known "Sigma Culture", among many other memes and viral clips on the internet.
It can be said that, among so much auditory garbage that is currently out there, I found Phonk which is, for me, both an escape and an explosion of all of the above. It's influence on popular culture is incredible and, while many say the genre is "dead" it's still heard a lot around this southeastern side of America. And, of course, as a lover of strong genres that generate euphoria and strong emotions, this genre is already among my current favorites.

Una de las cosas que tanto me gusta hacer siempre - aparte de ver animes y películas - es escuchar música y soy de esos que dicen “escuchar de todo”. Sin embargo, mis gustos son tanto variados como exquisitos, en cierto sentido. Entre los géneros musicales que más me gusta escuchar diariamente está uno de esos que son muy populares hoy en día en redes sociales como TikTok, por ejemplo. Este género se llama popularmente “Phonk” y de este género es que les quiero hablar en el día de hoy.
ADVERTENCIA: El género que vamos a hablar y escuchar en este post no es recomendable para personas hipertensas o hipersensibles que sufran con sonidos fuertes. Se requiere mucho cuidado y consideración por parte del lector.
¿Qué es el Phonk?
Antes de explicar qué es esto, les quiero dejar claro que este género (antes conocido como un subgénero del Hip-Hop) no lo podemos confundir con la Música Electrónica, o EDM, el cual es algo muy diferente. Si bien tienen relación en cuanto a algunos subgéneros que se manejan, este tiene un origen y un sonido muy diferente al que escuchamos de la electrónica.
Originalmente, el Phonk fue un subgénero del Hip-Hop (inspirado más que todo por el Memphis Rap) que nació luego de combinar algunos samples de canciones de otros géneros como el Blues o el Soul con sonidos de percusión fuertes hechos a computadora y tiempos similares al Lo-Fi, amén de distorsiones y grabaciones de voz de algunos rap’s de Memphis. Y no solo fue la influencia de otros géneros, sino también fueron las distintas culturas de donde vinieron algunos de estos DJs y Productores que convirtieron el Phonk en algo tanto fuerte (similar o incluso mucho más fuerte que el Dubstep o el Hardcore) como lento, movido y pegadizo. Actualmente, el género se reconoce mucho en redes sociales, como TikTok, donde se utiliza mucho en clips de autos, “GYM’s Bro’s” o hasta en algunos memes de Latinoamérica. También son muy populares por sus versiones “Slowed + Reverb” o “Fast”.
¿Por qué me gusta tanto el Phonk?
En una época donde me cansé, literalmente, de escuchar tanto Rock, Pop, Baladas o hasta música Electrónica, me topé en TikTok con estos Samples hechos con un ritmo y una melodía que sonaba tanto fuerte como pegajosa. Este género que tanto llamaban Phonk me atrapó y de una me puse a buscar más canciones de este mismo hasta conseguir un repertorio de hasta cientos y cientos de pistas.
Su ritmo, tanto rápido como lento, su melodía tanto fuerte como suave y la combinación perfecta de percusiones con Sampleos y Sonidos Distorsionados me encantan. Esto me genera una especie de euforia que seguramente es lo que engancha a mucha gente tanto de mi generación como de la actual que tanto le fascina escuchar este tipo de música. También, este género lo relacionan mucho con los Gimnasios, la conocida “Cultura Sigma”, entre muchos otros memes y clips virales en internet.
Se puede decir que, de entre tanta basura auditiva que hay actualmente, encontré el Phonk que es, para mí, tanto un escape como una explosión de todo lo anteriormente dicho. Su influencia en la cultura popular es increíble y, si bien dicen muchos que el género “está muerto” aún se sigue escuchando mucho por este lado sureste de América. Y, por supuesto, como amante de los géneros fuertes que generan euforia y emociones fuertes, este género ya está entre mis favoritos actualmente.
