Greetings, friends of darkness. In today's post I will show you some pictures of the starry night sky and explain how I took and processed the pictures. The first image is a stacked image of 60 individual shots. I used the free StarStaX programme to stack the images. The programme is available for Windows and the machines with the bitten fruit. The Windows version runs on my Linux machine with the Wine emulator without any problems. The calculation of the starttrail image takes a few hours, depending on the computing power.

Seid gegrüßt Freunde der Dunkelheit. In meinem heutigen Beitrag werde ich euch einige Bilder des nächtlichen Sternenhimmels zeigen und erläutern wie ich die Bilder aufgenommen und bearbeitet habe. Das erste Bild ist ein gestacktes Bild aus 60 Einzelaufnahmen. Zum stacken der Bilder habe ich das kostenlose StarStaX verwendet. Das Programm gibt es für Windows und die Maschinen mit dem angebissenen Obst. Auf meiner Linux Maschine läuft die Windows Variante mit dem Emulator Wine ohne Probleme. Das berechnen des Starttrail Bildes dauert je nach Rechenleistung einige Stunden.

WHY STACKING?

Theoretically, you could also take an image like the cover picture in a single exposure. In this case, the total time was around 30 minutes. With a 30-minute exposures, the image noise is high even with good cameras. To reduce this, I took many individual pictures with a relatively short exposure time of 30 seconds. At the lighthouse you would also have the problem that the light from the lighthouse burns out in ever larger areas of the image the longer you expose. Even at 30 seconds, the beacon (2000 watt halogen lamp) is actually far too bright. The next time I'm on Hiddensee, I'll take the picture again. Hopefully then in better quality.

Theoretisch könnte man ein Bild wie das Titelbild auch in einer einzelnen Belichtung aufnehmen. Die Gesamtzeit betrug in diesem Fall ungefähr 30 Minuten. Bei einer 30 Minuten Belichtung ist das Bildrauschen selbst mit guten Kameras hoch. Um dieses zu verringern habe ich viele einzelne Bilder mit einer relativ kurzen Belichtungszeit von 30 Sekunden aufgenommen. Am Leuchtturm hätte man darüber hinaus noch das Problem, dass das Licht des Leuchtturms in immer größeren Bildbereichen ausbrennt umso länger man belichtet. Selbst bei 30 Sekunden ist das Leuchtfeuer (2000 Watt Halogenlampe) eigentlich schon viel zu hell. Wenn ich das nächste Mal auf Hiddensee bin, werde ich das Bild wiederholen. Hoffentlich dann in besserer Qualität.

I took this picture for later processing of the stacked images. It serves as a basis for the brightness of the light from the lighthouse, so to speak. There are not many stars to be seen here. The difference in brightness between the lighthouse and the stars is far too great. It is anything but easy to photograph the starry sky in a place like this. But simple things are usually too boring for me. 😁

Dieses Bild habe ich für die spätere Bearbeitung der gestackten Bilder aufgenommen. Es dient sozusagen als Basis für die Helligkeit des Lichts des Leuchtturms. Besonders viele Sterne sind hier nicht zu sehen. Der Helligkeitsunterschied zwischen Leuchtturm und den Sternen ist viel zu groß. Es ist alles andere als einfach an solche einem Ort den Sternenhimmel zu fotografieren. Aber einfache Sachen sind mir meist zu langweilig. 😁

I walked round the lighthouse once. I increased the ISO to 3200 for this shot. You can see the poor image quality in the enlargement. On the one hand, this is due to the high ISO. And the Samyang lens doesn't necessarily have the best image quality at open aperture.

Ich bin einmal um den Leuchtturm rumgelaufen. Für diese Aufnahme hab ich den ISO auf 3200 erhöht. In der Vergößerung sieht man die schlechte Bildqualität. Das ist einerseits dem hohen ISO geschuldet. Und das Samyang Objektiv hat bei offener Blende nicht unbedingt die besten Abbildungsleistung.

In addition, the Samyang sometimes paints funny effects into the picture as you can see above. I like to say "That's a feature." But in this case, I'm not so sure it's a cool feature.

Darüber hinaus malt das Samyang zuweilen lustige Effekte mit ins Bild wie man oben sehen kann. Ich sage ja gerne "Das ist ein Feature." Aber in diesem Fall bin ich mir da nicht ganz so sicher, ob das ein cooles Feature ist.

From a greater distance, the large difference in brightness between the lighthouse and the stars is no longer as significant. An overall quite balanced image. I like it. Not only because there is a shooting star in the picture.

Aus größerer Entfernung ist der große Helligkeitsunterschied zwischen Leuchtturm und Sternen nicht mehr so gravierend. Ein insgesamt recht ausgewogenes Bild. Mir gefällt's. Nicht nur weil eine Sternschnuppe im Bild ist.

These three pictures were also taken in one exposure each with the Nikon D750. However, this time I had the much better Laowa 12/2.8 on the camera. The difference is clearly visible in the compressed JPEG even without magnification.

Diese drei Bilder wurden ebenfalls in jeweils einer Belichtung mit der Nikon D750 aufgenommen. Allerdings hatte ich dieses Mal das deutlich bessere Laowa 12/2,8 an der Kamera. Der Unterschied ist auch ohne Vergrößerung im komprimierten JPEG deutlich zu sehen.

For this picture I stacked some of the 60 pictures I used for the cover picture with the programme Sequrator. With this programme it is possible to align and stack the stars. You can select an image as the base image and specify that the foreground is fixed. The programme is incredibly fast compared to the other Astro programmes. Calculating the image took about 1 minute. I think the result is impressive. I will be testing this further soon with better source images. Sequrator is available free of charge for Windows and MacOS. Für dieses Bild habe ich einige der 60 Bilder, die ich für das Titelbild benutzt habe mit dem Programm Sequrator gestackt. Mit diesem Programm ist es möglich die Sterne auszurichten und zu stacken. Man kann ein Bild als Basisbild wählen und festlegen, dass der Vordergrund fixiert wird. Das Programm ist im Vergleich zu den anderen Astro Programmen wahnsinnig schnell. Das berechenen des Bildes hat ungefähr 1 Minute gedauert. Das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen, wie ich finde. Ich werde das demnächst weiter mit besseren Ausgangsbildern testen. I hope to be able to photograph the starry sky at night in the next few days. The conditions have to be right. No clouds, no moon and little light pollution. And then a beautiful landscape or something else cool for the foreground.

Ich hoffe, dass ich in den nächsten Tagen den nächtlichen Sternenhimmel fotografieren kann. Die Bedingungen müssen passen. Keine Wolken, kein Mond und wenig Lichtverschmutzung. Und dann noch eine schöne Landschaft oder irgendwas anderes Cooles für den Vordergund.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
