2023: The Year I Started Circus Training 😵

in #balance5 months ago

The colder seas have pushed paddleboarding to the back-burner for the past few months and so I've wanted to find some other activities to learn, which primarily would help with balance and coordination and be good fun!

Toys not just for boys

The first toy I saw that looked like it would help my paddleboarding whilst I wasn't on the water was this Amazon basics balance board.

We need to talk about that ankle pronation

The boards are less than 30 euros, take up little space, and boast (well, it's other people like me and the gym goat who are boasting) health benefits such as improved balance and coordination, stronger lower legs and ankles, increased motor skills, injury prevention, improved posture and more!

I don't think it took more than a week or so to get to grips with standing on one or both legs with legs straight. Just holding the position, especially on one leg, is a good exercise but the real effort comes when you start trying to squat. The board tends to wobble as I lower and pretend to sit on the invisible chair behind, and the legs start burning after only a few minutes.

From my home office, I've been walking past and jumping on the board most days since I made the purchase and would totally recommend to anyone. However, there are other types of balance boards, and I was pretty keen to get hold of one of these too.

Last thing here... looking at the GIF above, what do you think my pronation range is?

Aged less than 10 and in lots of pain daily from running after a football, a doctor suggested both my ankles be broken and reset. I declined!

Like surfing on dry land?

Another popular balance board shape looks more similar to a surf (or paddle) board, and through a bit of luck I got the POWRX for a pretty penny just before Christmas. The board was priced at 60 euros in early December, with a 50% discount available and so I ordered one as a Christmas present for a friend. A week passed and Amazon told me they'd not heard from the supplier, so I cancelled the order and bought another. They both arrived the same day, and thus far the refunded one has not made it back into the postbox.... feliz cumpleaños para mi!

Anyway! Here I am on my newest board with my PJ bottoms and a clue as to what other toy I may have been playing with the last few months - more on that in the future perhaps!

He's wearing those fluffy socks with the grippy bobbles, the cheat!

This board, whist generally more expensive than the circular 'wobble' board efforts, has become my favourite of the two pretty quickly. Although the GIFs in this post don't show this (cause I want to get better before presenting!), it is possible to stand in a surf position, and perform a fair few tricks - which I'll let someone else show you!

I am hoping all this indoor balancing will further improve my paddleboarding, as well as contributing towards good health in general. This maybe well depend on what else I choose to couple with the board - I'm not sure Expresso Martini's quite fit into the health kick I'm on at present - this was prior to dry January!

One HIVE to the person who correctly identifies the blue object on the far left of the table at the window!

Both boards have been in use today - the circular one works well for press-ups I've found.

Has anyone been using a balance board, and if so, what have your motives been and are you having a good time there?!

Cheers

Asher

Impressive balance skills mate, do you think the balance work will correct your ankles, or is the surgery needed (asking for a friend)

Getting better - practice and stubbornness seems to be doing the trick!

I'm 45 now and I think they are long set in their ways! But I do think that the supporting muscles have gotten stronger - they must have!

One leg at a time on the circular board (once you've got the hang of balancing, which took about a week for me) feel like its really working those ankles, but it has gotten easier.

Did you go straight to the one leg stuff or is there something easier to start off with

I would say it is as 'easy' to balance on one leg as two once you get to grips with it. One leg at a time tires that leg quicker and feels like a proper workout if you can get to squats too!

Cool skills. My balance exercise tends to be limited to standing on one leg whilst brushing my teeth. Having good balance is useful in life, especially as you get old and falls are more painful.

Heh :) That's a good start! Do you alternate each day?

I've had a couple of falls from the board with the roller but nothing too bad thus far!

I swap over half way. I just find that little injuries take a while to heal now.

Good man :)

I just find that little injuries take a while to heal now

Yes I've noticed the same. 11 months for a little muscle on the forearm was my latest!

I'm going that blue thing is a can crusher and not a giant blue rubber penis 😀

Bleh, you beat me to it, it is a blue rubber dildo, ain't it?

Pretty much, apparently they call them bongs nowadays 😀😀

Clearly it is not a giant rubber penis, and just an average rubber penis!

Close [guess] as lip action is preferable! :O

Lol. I'm like Dougal in Father Ted having big cow but far away explained to him!

😂

Sorry, bad English man English above, but worth it so I got to see the clip!

A winner guessed da Bong!

Seems like you are having fun with it :) How are you doing with the actual paddleboarding?

This post has been manually curated by the VYB curation project

I am, especially when coupled with other activities :D

Paddle is going great! It's a bit chilly at present in the water, we've been out (I'll post soon enough on the subject) on the boards over Christmas though :D

Thank you!

Please tag me when you do post it :)

Winner!

CBD is on sale in the grow-shops here, water bong works for me :)

We don't hear from you for ages, then we get two posts in a row! 2024 is definitely lookng a good year for Hive.

Seriously, good to see you posting again Ash we need good solid people coming back. And glad you're still enjoying Spain!

And I have another in the works for this week! 😮

This year I think is the year to collect as much of everything as possible, and it will be 2025 where we can skim and bank something for the next lows - hopefully!

Thank you very much for the kind message, Happy New Year!

Woooooo! How you are able to balance on that board still amazed me, the one leg balance got me wowed! It's important for one to have a good balance. Me thinking if can stand on that board with one leg

Thank you!

Balance can be improved standing on many things - even a small rock i guess :)

Your post motivated and I tried standing on a single stone with one leg today, I almost fell 😂

🤣 be careful!

Hi Asher,

Feliz año :))

Cool, balancing while having a drink, that is a pro-level already :))

The blue little item? Could be something connected to juggling, like that diabolo thing?

Hola y feliz año!

Thank you - I didn't actually spill a drop! :D

The blue item is not connected to juggling - which reminds me, I need to locate my juggling balls!

Well, at least you are reminded about the juggling balls 😉

I could guess the name of the plant with the red flowers instead haha - but that was not the question 😂

I've looked but to no avail thus far!

I could guess the name of the plant with the red flowers instead

You can do this also, to receive a well done! :D

It's so good to see posts from you again and as one who struggles just to stand, I'm quite impressed with your balance!😁

Thank you Melinda, I'm going to try keep this going into the New Year. Glad to hear from you, I hope for a great 2024 for you and yours :)

Your posts have always been some of my favorites here, and your vasectomy post is 5 star and holds more real world value than anything I have ever read here.

Oh, and we all missed the Engagement League so much that with some inspiration and encouragement from @brittandjosie, I started using the Ecency Leaderboard to award Engagement each week. It's fun, but still a work in progress that is requiring a little fine tuning!

And the ELE is doing great 👍 @melinda010100

Aww, that's really kind of you to say. I have struggled with confidence, ideas, and post popularity embarrassment in the past, and so it's really nice to know some posts are considered valuable 😄

I also feel a little sad for dropping the EL, but don't regret the decision to do so. Your support throughout the EL means a lot to me, hopefully you are supported with your engagement endeavours. Thank you!

I've missed the EL too! Am glad to see that Melinda is making it a tradition 🙌

Yes it is great to see!

I bet that it's a lot harder to control than it seems in the pictures. But who would ever have guessed balance is so important in our lives anyway? Well done with that board :D

It does take a little time, and I've been balancing on my Paddleboard all summer so perhaps have a head start.

For less than 30 euros though, you can't go wrong!

I have one! And I have a love hate relationship with it! I needed it after anckle problems, I torn my ankle ligaments and to undergo rehabilitation. It’s a cool way to train and balance all muscles you don’t know you had. So what’s next ?
a steel wire to walk on? balance is everything!

Glad to hear you have one - how has the board worked for rehabilitating your ankle?

Its the best and after using it daily the ankle is stronger than before, it the balance that makes you correct certain movements. With Appel or field hockey the feet movement is,quick and small , balance is everything , I recommend it to everyone.

But there is one for the core aswell, you sit in a kinda shell like thing and balance is key.
I have one and it’s killing for the core and abdomen muscles

They seem to be helping you a lot. What does the one for core and abs look like?

I wanted to comment on this post hours ago but was mesmerized watching your gif of balancing and ninja stick-twirling - there goes seven hours I'll never get back. Anyway, if I go on that thing I'd fall off in three fucken seconds and bust my noggin open like a melon. So...probably best I don't try. 😊

If these GIFs mesmerized you, wait until the 'ninja stick' post :D

I did cause the board to fly from under me the other day - there is a mark on the wall :)

Lol...well now I'm holding my breath until the ninja stick post.

Tomorrow perhaps-my legs still far to high up Trend land 😳

I am very surprised that there are such devices to exercise the muscles of the ankles at home, and I also ask myself the question, is there the possibility of suffering a sprain or any type of injury with this type of movement?

I would say there is a very small chance of injury from the roller board, but the circular board isn't moving and injury risk seems unlikely.

Juggling next, if you get into it it's a surprisingly good upper body workout...

Wow 7!

I can do 3, tried hard for 4 but not got it yet, and now I've lost my juggling balls 😢

4 is seperate hands - tough! Bit more jolting too. 7 for 10 minutes is insane!

I'm going to get some new balls and have another go at learning 4!

Get 5, or two sets of 3, then you can teach others!

very impressive balance. your skills are crazy good.

Gimme another year :D Cheers!

Very impressive! I can't do that myself. I know you spent a lot of time, discipline and efforts to succeed in it. But you finally made it @abh12345.

Thank you :)

Wow, your balance on the second board looks good. I'd like to try it someday since it improves overall health.
I thought the object on the table was a toy rocket until I scrolled through the comments and realized it was a bong, lol

Welcome back, balancing act with much action in the comments, educational!

It's intriguing how you've incorporated the balance boards into various exercises, like using the circular one for press-ups. Also, your playful reference to the blue object on the table is quite engaging.
